Yep looks like the 03 requires external 12v source. I removed the bridge, and connected the middle wire to a switched 12v source (acc position) and that fixed it 
Also wired up my new LC1. since I got rid of the XD16, I had to install the pushbutton and LED to perform the free air calibrations. Here they are.
