Need some input on this one... I just finished the plugs and saw the TB was dirty around the edges so I pulled it - "dirty" was an understatement.
Here are some picks of it and what was behind, I'm going to clean the TB but what about the neck for the intake? I'm pretty sure this is from the "crankcase vent" that goes into the air box, but I already fixed that with a re-route of the vent.

To clean the throttle body, spray brake cleaner on a rag, and then wipe it clean. Dont use throttle body cleaner, and don't spray any cleaner directly onto the tb itself. Many people have ruined their throttle body while trying to clean it.

As for the intake, you can just reach in there with a rag to clean as much as possible. Then run some seafoam through it to clean up whatever you can't reach.

Thanks - I've never done Sea Foam before, how do I go about it for TB? What ruins the TB with spraying it?

I think people run into issues when the get a little overzealous with the spray and end up hitting the electronics with it. I sprayed mine directly with single and carefully aimed bursts. No issues since I've done it, but I'll probably go the safe route next time.

Seafoam is great stuff... In my old '95, it dislodged something and got it from 7mpg to about 11mpg lol... if you were that into cleaning it, you could remove the intake manifold and clean it off the truck... but that's a little too labor intensive if ya ask me, especially when Seafoam will do just about as good. They have the cans at walmart that dump right into the gas tank, but you can get online (and maybe in some stores) a can that has a spray neck on it to shoot it into the intake while the truck is running. Never had a chance to use that but I'd imagine it'd work pretty well.

My throttle body & intake plenum looked worse than yours on my last truck @ 105k , I basically done exactly what Hemi450hp said above .

This is why I installed an oil catch can on my 2014 right away .

A good read .

I've been debating it... I think the crankcase vent going into the air box "after" the filter was a poor design.

Me too ! Imo a catch can or some means of routing the PCV overboard is a must on the 5.7L

Yeah, I pulled the the extension pipe going to the air box and put a valve cover filter in its place.

Appreciate the input, I picked up a can of Foam yesterday when I got the brake cleaner. I found an older thread on here and one of the members was comparing the Foam to snake oil and said it didn't work. I'll be buying some stuff called Archoil here shortly and running that in my truck... good stuff.

If you are talking about the line that goes from the oil fill to the airbox, thats actually the fresh air make up line. The pcv on gen 3 hemis is integral to the intake manifold. Here it is on a 03

maxresdefault.jpg

The bright blue object. Thats the lil guy that ***** up the inside of the intake manifold. Along with egr, but not in 03.

Charonblk has a good write up on bypassing the pcv. Maybe he will happen across this thread.

Yeah, that's the line I'm talking about. When I looked at the exploded parts view of my generation 5.7 that was labeled as the crankcase vent line. Regardless, it was sending oil strait to the TB, I had cleaned the oil of ATS and put the small filter on the hose at the same time, haven't an issue since. I've been thinking of doing an EGR delete since it's starting to give me grief again, doubt I'll get any performance gains out of it, but it'll clear out some space.

Edit: The HEMI pictured is an older version as mine no longer uses plug wires. I did replace the PCV a good while back, didn't really sho wany improvement that I could notice.
