So, I want to get a radar detector to replace the one I have. It finally died. I am interested in mounting the detector under the rear view mirror. Lots of aftermarket hardware exists to do this. I also would like to grab power off the mirror rather than having a cord hang down.

Anyone done this? Can you tell me how?

Is it worth even having a radar detector in your area? The fuzz in my area all set speed traps with laser making them useless to have. I had a Redline and a V1 and they never alerted me to anything but false alarms..

id rather have a "the moron driving next to you is on his phone" detector... LOL

I have mine hidden behind the tint eyebrow and the cord run between the W/S and the headliner, down the A pillar, under steering into cig lighter.
EDIT: Passport 9500ix.
And it works fine being behind the tint.

While some of the police in my area run laser traps, there are still a majority of guys using KA band. So I am willing to invest in a detector to weed those out.

I think your best bet is to run the power along the headliner and windshield. Then drop it through you A pillar and bring it through you lower dash to the A/C outlet.

Blendmount has the mounting bracket and PowerTap wiring for all our trucks mirror options. Everything for my 8500xi is run off the mirror power using the pigtail power wires. You also have a hard wire option if you want to go that route.

Another reason i like mine into the cigarette lighter is so i can mute it when i need to. Easy to reach down. My wire has a mute on the cig lighter plug. I think they most do now.

They still makes these? LOL So 1990s.. There is no way these still work.
IF you say oh mine has paid for it self time and time again... keep telling yourself this..

If you understood how radars work today, you know the second you hear it, it's too late.

You are better off using WAZE App.

The police laser radar guns now are an instant read pulse type. They look through it, target your vehicle and them pull the trigger. It gives them your speed and takes a picture (evidence it was your vehicle) instantly. Like others have said, at that point it's too late, the radar detector will let you know your busted.

You would probably wear out the mute button the first trip down the freeway.

I have a escort and put a sticky cup mount on the windshield behind the mirror to the right side as high as I could to make it hard to see by window shoppers. Then pulled the overhead console down, and soldered the RD power wires to the negative and power wires on the rear power window switch connector.
I like using a mirror tap power cord, and cut the push pins off it and add about 4 inches of wire to it so
it will be long enough.

I've got an Escort 9500ix wired up to the overhead console.

True, if you're solo on a road and it goes off then chances are you're busted. However, if you're coming up quickly behind 3-4 cars ahead of you and it goes off it at leaves gives you a chance to slow down. In my area there are still cops that drive with it constantly on while driving through the canyon roads and in those cases I get plenty of warning to slow down.

I agree. I drive 50 miles daily going to and from work in secondary roads, and the locals turn their K band on and leave it on. I am glad they do not sit in the same place, so the 9500 does not lock them out. I also have the 9500ix, and would not trade it for anything else.
This is when I had it in my 07 before I put it in the Sport.

So, radars are a shot of wide band and expands more it goes out. Laser not so much. A pencil beam. You can be next to someone driving - a cop tag the car next to you - and your detector will never go off. I actually seen a bunch of testing on this on Youtube. I wonder if they are still up. These were YEARS ago.

If you're in a pack and driving say 65 in a 45.. a cop isn't going to anything..

Like my friend who see's a cop and stomps on his breaks and goes 15 under. SMH :)

You guys still have cds? :)

I agree. The only ticket I've got in like the last 30 years was 2 from going 65 in a 45 running through an intersection with a redlight camera. Didn't know they did that, only thought red light running..

I use my bluetooth now to run my audio through my truck. I run the WAZE app and it tell me, COP REPORTED ahead or red light camera or speed trap ahead. Of course people have to report it on the app before you, but it works well.

The newer RD have laser jamming ability supposedly. Expensive as hell. See the stinger vip at stinger dot com. I know I am skeptical at this point.

I have my 9500xi wired into a lazer shifter kit, I only have it on the front, none on the rear so if I get tagged from behind then I'm getting a ticket but they can only do that from overpasses in my area and the 9500xi has all the GPS functions and updated locations of regular speed traps and red light/speed cameras; it's not as good as Waze for the random locations but it does me just fine.
