What makes the V8s in the durangos different from the V8s in the Rams? I have a ton of durangos at my local pull-a-part and like 1 ram with an intact engine.

Oil pan maybe. And I think the Durangos were built on a Dakota frame.

are you talking about 2nd Gen Durangos?? if so the engines are all the same a 4.7 is the same in the Durango's as the Rams...same as the 5.7 Hemi. all come from the same place.

2nd gen durangos and 2nd gen rams are completely different. 2nd gen durangos are 04-09. Do you mean 1st gen durangos?

It would sure help if you listed the engine size - 239/318/360/4.7?

If the pushrod series - not much. If the 4.7 - could be a lot, depending on year.

I can only assume from your info that you mean the V6/239. If so, the long blocks are all the same. Maybe some differences in oil pan, but you can swap yours to the new one.

To answer your question...yes, if you replace your 3.9 from the Ram with a 5.2/5.9 engine from the Durango but...you will need a wiring harness or at least the one in the truck altered.... remember it has an additional 2 fuel injectors....

All the 1st Gen Durangos in the yard have 5.2 318. My truck has the 3.9 V6.
There is a lesson in the prevalence of 318 (5.2L) engines in the wreckers yard.

The original '98 Durangos came with either the (318) 5.2L engine standard or the optional (360) 5.9L. There was a V-6 too but that was actually a delete order from the standard V8 option. Early on the 5.2L began to have issues. The 5.2 turned out to throw a lot of oil sludge. This caused oil related bearing failures--particularly for lazy owners who did not change their oil frequently. This actually hurt Durango sales as the oil related bearing failures caused an overall reputation for Durango's being unreliable. The 4.7L with SOC eventually replaced the 5.2. Chrysler engineers determined the 98th percentile of 4.7L engines would reach 145K miles before failure, making it a far more reliable engine than the 5.2.

The poor reliability reputation actually helped me as I bought two gently used 1st Gen Durangos, an 00 with 5.9L and an 03 with 4.7L far cheaper than other truck based SUVs.

The 4.7 is a good reliable engine, but gas mileage is almost the same as the 5.7L Hemi for almost 65 less horsepower (depending on model year, and a bunch of other variables).

I know what ya mean by junkyard engines, its definitely a gamble. The wiring harness I am not worried about because I can always send it to Painless Wirings to fix it up. Hopefully the ram out there I looked at will have a decent engine to use. It was intact and had the wiring along with it. I just wish I knew if the internals were ok. Also wish I could turn it over.

Painless has a lot of wiring solutions but they are pricey.

The 5.2 will still be a big just over that ill-balanced 3.9.
But if you're going through the effort, make sure you get the wiring harness and computer too. Trying to find a 5.9 Dak/Dur/Ram in a junkyard is surprisingly hard!

There is a ram at pull-a-part with the 5.2, I am going to look at first probably this Sunday or Monday.
