Hi all!

New to the forum!

I just bought my first ever dodge Ram 1500 4x4 2001 with the 5.2.
its got 275,000 kms and has been very well looked after. and is bone stock.
i love it!

Only issue i have is when i drive it for more than say 30 mins. the muffler under the bed seems to heat up so badly that it actually melts my plastic bedliner!!??
it smells horrible and I'm afraid it could turn into a fire or something!
I've looked online for any recalls or anything but no luck. i found one or two similar stories online but no answers?

What do you guys think? has anyone else experienced anything like this?

It seems to me like there should be a heat shield between the muffler and the bed.

Hey Josh! Welcome to RF and congrats on your truck!

I would imagine it would be easy enough to add a heat shield over the muffler, on the under side of the bed?

From the factory, all 3 2G Rams I had, had a sheet metal heat shield above the muffler.
You should be able to fabricate, or just junkyard a replacement if you do not have one.

Also, the muffler, not any of the exhaust should be closer than say 3-4" from the bottom of the bed, so check that out too.

yeah shouldn't be too much of an issue.

just seemed weird that it was even like that from factory. unless I've got a hole in the muffler and its heating more than normal. doesn't sound like I've got a leak tho..?

do you think that silver stick on heat reflector stuff will work?

Josh..

That silver tape will not hold up to the heat. Best way I have found to check for leaks is: with the truck cold, start it up, climb underneath, and feel around for leaks. Won't take long for the muffler to heat up so ya need to be quick about it.

Heat wrap it. They sell it at almost every auto parts stores.
It will hold up. I have my exhaust coming off my turbo wrapped.
