Finally located and picked up a ProCharger kit for the 2014 RAM 1500 project. We've been doing a ton of mods lately on the channel but wanted to really turn things up with the procharger kit. Lots of mods have been happening to the truck and JBA headers and install are also on the way.

Be sure to follow along as I have been documenting the full build on the truck with videos on everything.

Here is the details on the procharger kit

I have a 2014 Ram 1500 also. I was looking at getting a procharger kit once the truck is paid off in like 2 years. Can’t wait to see your truck in action!

Why did you choose a procharger over a Hell cat type supercharger? Is there an advantage of the turbos over the roots style blower?

I went with the "centrifugal" type instead of a "twin screw" type supercharger for a few reasons but the main one is that the Procharger kit comes with an intercooler and piping to cool charge air. With the weak pistons on the 5.7L detonation will be the enemy and high heat and pump gas will be the limiting factor. If I can get rid of some of the heat with this type of S/C it definitely helps plus I can always spray water/**** on the air to air intercooler as well as do **** injection if I want to push things past the stock procharger boost levels and test my luck.

Thanks! Very cool! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

While that question alone has been argued and contemplated for years and years as every power adder has advantages and disadvantages.

The Roots blowers are full power at low RPM and usually taper a bit on the top end. These give a huge low end torque advantage, while that sounds great in a drag race this can make traction very tricky, but if you are towing this is by far the best in terms of getting things moving.

Centrifugal are like turbos, but instead of using free exhaust power they use a belt off the motor. How is this better than a turbo you ask? Its predictable and instant. At any said RPM you can tune for any pedal position as it will be the same every time. Where a turbo may need to spool to get to the peak performance which can be wildly unpredictable. These superchargers are better for top end like a turbo they are more geared for high RPM boost, and less on the low end. This is better for traction and they generally hold full power all the way to the top of the power band. Great for drag racing and highway driving.

Turbos are great for racing and power combined but harder to setup. They can provide great midrange and top end power, but usually take some work to getting low end as they need exhaust power to spool and at low RPM's this is harder on some engines based on turbo size. They do run off exhaust power where superchargers need the motor to spin them up so in almost all cases the same level of boost yields more power. The major downside is predictability aka turbo lag. You cant just push the pedal down and power is ready to go, it needs to build. Ive seen cars do this very fast in a second or less, some are a few seconds. I know your thinking whats a few seconds? Well jump over a lane to pass someone real quick and you realize someone already had that idea and coming at you in a hurry, in that case 2 seconds becomes an eternity. The good news is when the power comes on its there for the ride! The other major drawback is the setup, there are frigin hoses everywhere!

Hope that helps a little. Its not the end all, but generally speaking.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess it all comes down to what you want to accomplish.

exactly, each one adds power, its how much and where in the powerband you want it. and its vague as they each can overlap in more specific ways. top fuel dragsters use roots for all the low end to get flying, giant semis use turbos for low end torque.

So again these were just basics, there are exceptions to these as well but this forum isnt big enough to dig into that insanity.

Wanted to start setting some track times as the mods progress. Made 3 passes with the 24" wheels at a 1/8th mile strip to see where things are with just the bolt ons. Best pass was a 9.48 with these 85lb 24" wheels but we will be hitting the 1/8th mile again this week with the light 17" wheels to set some better times and also turn off torque management.

Here are the drag strip night shenanigans!
