How long does everyone let their Hemi warm up in the morning?

I have noticed my Ram takes awhile to warm up in the morning. Not an issue, just the way it is, and I normally wait a minute or two. It seems the colder its getting thats not long enough. I have read different things about not letting a Hemi idle to long but you have to let them warm up, along with all the different fluids throughout the truck.
Curious what everyone does on this.

Idle time is not good for these engines. They have to low of oil pressure/flow at the set idle RPM.

So keep warm up time to a minimum. Best thing is to let the high idle go down (about 1 min) and then Drive like you have a cup of hot coffee on your dashboard for a while.

Also if you have an RFE transmission fluid in your trans does not pump while in “park”. So cycling through neutral, drive, and reverse while sitting in your driveway will get the fluid moving in your trans before you drive off.

as soon as I start my truck I throw it right into neutral (my truck always has the E brake on when parked) because that does not affect high idle. Then when high idle goes down I put it into drive in reverse for a few seconds each.

As long as it takes to be able to see out. It's not the 1970's any more and these vehicles are designed to be driven to warm up.

If you're concerned about a warm up period, install a block heater. Then you have the best of both worlds, a warm engine at start up and no need for prolonged idle times. In the carburetor days (or for diesels) they were immensely useful when it was really cold.

In the winter up north usually a full remote start cycle to be honest... In the summer maybe 2 or 2 min. I did that with my 2010 for 265k km (164Miles) without a hiccup. Motor ran great the day I sold it, and plan to do the same with my 16.

mind you I live close to a highway so Id rather not be full throttling it without the motor being warm.

I think a lot of the answers depend on where the truck is - someone in Juneau, AK right now is going to have a longer warmup time than someone in Phoenix, AZ.

I daresay that the older engines are going to take a little longer than the new ones - not just because of mileage, but because of older tech versus newer tech.

When I lived in Utah, my ancient-but-rebuilt F-250 with a 460 v8 was a cold-blooded beast in winter. I had to give it at least 5 minutes of warmup time under the coldest temps before I could go anywhere w/o risking an engine stall (carb tuning be damned), because the higher altitude compounded things badly.

Nowadays, you don't have to worry about fuel mixture, if the points are frost-free, or etc crap like that, so I think most of it is moot point. I figure you can treat a Hemi no differently than I treat my little v6 - turn it on, wait maybe a minute while I mess with the radio and put my seatbelt on, then put it in gear and get on with things.

10-15 minutes if it's below 20-30 or above 80-85 degrees. I'm sure that's going to get a reaction out of some people here, but I bought my truck to enjoy it, and part of that is remote starting to achieve cabin comfort. Not to mention, I also idle a lot during the summer during breaks at softball tournaments we must attend. I also get rid of my trucks by around 50-65k or so miles so I'm not worried about the long term health of my hemi.

As for the temps in between, might remote start for a couple minutes before I head out the door, or will fire it up and let it idle down before pulling away.

Right now a good 10 mins. Before that the cab is too cold and I don't feel like driving in winter gloves and a parka. In normal weather conditions until the idle drops, which usually happens pretty quick.20200115_092507.jpg

I get irritated if my tire's psi do not match, kPa would be an OCD nightmare...
Ocd nightmare is the swing in temperature makes the tire pressure go down enough for the warning, but in normal temps they're a touch on the high side so I don't want to fill them more or see the tpms warning. Almost makes me want to fill them with nitrogen, but I'm too cheap and it's a hassle.

Living in Southeast Texas on the Gulf Coast, I can do tend to follow your post mostly. On a typical day, comfortable weather, it is what I said above. During summer (miserably hot and humid) and winter (miserably cold and still humid), I will let it run long enough to get cabin temps comfortable. I've let it run long enough it finished out the 15 minute remote start cycle and shut off more times than I can count.

I also dont tend to keep vehicles more than a few years. I wish I could say 50-65k miles, but I've got 60k already and I've only had mine 2.5 years. Gotta pay down on the loan a bit before I get rid of it. If I actually paid it off, I'd probably have 150k+ miles on it and I dont see myself ever having a vehicle that long.

If my windows are frosted long enough to clear and not destroy blades. If not long enough for blue tooth sync. Then I drive easy cause I'm drinking hot coffee. LoL

Sounds like a pretty fair amount of driving. I keep mine about 2.5+ years but buy them with around 20k miles, about 2.5+ years later they usually have around 50-60k on them. This truck might add up a little faster as we've done more road trips in it, and will be driving from NY to Miami and back in June. Sounds like our way of doing things works well for us, I know I've been happy with how I've done each time at trade in.
