You'll have to jack it up,to get the correct amount of fluid back in it.
i saw that. i plan to drain and remove the pan.. then jack it up from the rear with a level flush against the pan rail until level. then install new plan and fill

I changed the fluid on my truck at 50k, ran it a couple hundred miles and drain and fill again, did the same a third time where the fluid was red just to make sure had about 95% new fluid, also the PPE pan makes the next drain so easy as the drain plug is easily accsessible.
I god a decent deal on Redline but if were doing today would go with Maxlife.
This is exactly what I did and what I'd recommend for the OP to do.

make sure to level front to back and side to side. You will likely need some higher jack stands than the standard 3 ton stands that most home garages have in them. You will also need some method to pump fluid into the pan upon refill. I've used this before...

Now I have this and it's much much better...

I think you quoted the wrong guy, lol.I've been doing yearly fluid changes on my 8 speed since i blew the first one up back in 17,and put a brand new 8 speed in my truck. That's how i got the green sheet, thats fairly famous now, lol.

Drained 5 qt but took just shy or about 6 on the refill following the directions for level check. Weird
That’s pretty common. Same thing when I did my first fluid change. Five quarts came out but 5.5 went back in. I suppose the factory fill isn’t done in the rocket science department.

i have a whine like a super charger if i floor it from a dead stop.. might have always been there i dont know... i was just out testing shifts so i tested by flooring from a dead stop..

normal driving it shifts perfect.... for now

also i feeel i have a slight rattle from time to time right before it shifts into second. might be vibrating from some where else like exhaust clamps or something but i did notice it.

Mine also took in a little more than what drained out. ~16k until my next drain and fill.

I don’t think a battery disconnect forces a relearn with the HP8 transmission. The topic has had some discussion on this forum and from what I’ve gathered the relearn process has to be initiated via computer with the TCU. Some folks have success using AlfaOBD, others not.

Would be interested in knowing this for sure, but would suspect that you would have to force a relearn via a computer or higher level scan tool. I know when I was in the automotive engineering world 10+ years ago you had to do it through a computer or scan tool. Don't think you would want to start a relearn just because you replaced the battery or the battery went dead (which is basically the same thing as disconnecting the battery......).

62Blazer brings up a good point with the battery disconnect/relearn issue. Maybe the OP can reach out to Wild one as his knowledge on the 8 speed is head and shoulders above mine.

I've heard these ZF's learn your driving habits, so you have to change up the way you drive for them to alter their shift patterns.

It does seem to help to me, every now and then I exercise the skinny pedal....lol :Big Laugh:

It does seem to help with the downshift 'bump' that happens when taking the foot off the brake to accelerate from a stop. Could be my imagination, too.....lol

It isn't going to hurt to try a battery disconnect, then take it out and drive it like you stole it.If it still acts funny, then you might have to try a tcm relearn. Disconnecting the battery should reset the adaptives, and give you basically a clean sheet for it to relearn your driving habits
