** If there is already a thread with this answer, please let me know. I've hunted amongst various sites.

I have a 2012 Ram 1500 Express (5.7). The instrument panel is the basic one without the fancy EVIC screen in middle of speedo and tach. Is there a simple way to add a transmission temperature gauge other than adding an aftermarket sensor? Does anyone know of an OBDII plug-in that will allow me to monitor transmission temps?

I will be towing a camper and would like to monitor trans temps, especially on hills. Thank you.

Try a Scanguage. They just plug into the obd port and you set different things on the little screen to monitor. I had a 16 Tacoma that I was towing a camper with and used a scanguage to watch the trans temps. Worked well.

The Torque app will allow you to monitor engine and trans parameters, you'll need a Bluetooth OBD module.
There is also the Edge CTS, it plugs into the OBD ports and has a lot better display than the ScanGauge.

@TwitchySumo , I've got a 2017 Express with the non-fancy display, and mine still shows the transmission temperature. Does yours not have this little (but useful!) screen? I didn't know there was a third, even more basic gauge cluster.

There was a major update to the Gen4 trucks for the '13 model year, the gauge clusters were upgraded. Unfortunately they're not backwards compatible.

Mine does not have the screen in the middle. I wish like heck it did though. I think I’ve read about 2012 being an odd year for certain components. Thank you for your reply. Here is a picture of mine…

Hey, Crash.
So, for my 2012, I can get an Edge CTS and it’ll plug right into OBD port allowing me to monitor trans temps?

That sounds like a very simple solution if it’ll work.

It should, I know people read it on Cummins trucks. You could email the manufacturer to check verify.
