Buying my first Dodge HD truck for towing (Been a Ford man up to now). Have two options at about the same price and would appreciate input on which way to go.

1) 2013 Ram 3500 Longhorn edition - 55,000 miles - Has the Ram 20 5th wheel hitch included.
2) 2018 Ram 2500 Tradesman edition - New.

Trailer I'll be towing has a max weight limit of 12,000 lbs. Live in So Cal, so have to go over the Grapevine or Cajon pass to get just about anywhere except the southern desert.

Thanks for your input

The 2500 only has about 2200 pounds of payload of you're going with the 6.7 on both. You're gonna max out the payload fairly quickly with a 12k pound trailer. I'd go with the 3500 if that's the case.

Be curious to know if the 18 2500 has more payload than the 13 3500. They keep adding more to them.

I think the 2013 Cummins gets considerably less MPG’s than the 2018 Cummins. If that matters to you at all.

Assuming you're talking diesel, you'll technically overload the 2500. I say technically because you'll be over payload but well under axle ratings and the ability of the truck. Of those two choices I'd go for new without hesitation if $$ is the same.

But I'm curious for more of the story... why just those 2 trucks? Lots of great deals at the end of the year.

Thanks for all you inputs. In Order

The '18/2500 payload is still less than the '13/3500

MPG matters, but not the biggest concern. Not an everyday driver.

Yes, talking diesel, so the additional payload on the 3500 does make a difference.

Reasons for these two: 1) Budget. 2) Budget. 3) Functionality

Wife is a master negotiator and has worked with dealers across the country (Including Dillion and Smith in Idaho) and has great deals pending on these two.

I thank you all for your input and am going w/ the 3500 Longhorn. Plan on being here frequently to learn more!
