Okay guys tell me the benefit on the two, I don't have anything big to tow right now but in the near future I'm planning on getting a 7 to 8000lbs trailer? I don't want to get a diesel because the wife and I don't care for them. Thanks for your comments, I'm going this week to look at a 2014 2500 hemi and I think that it have the 3.73 gears.

4.10 higher towing - lower mpg. Pretty much that simple.

My 1500 tows 7-8000 on the 3.55s.

Now I will admint I am not trying to win any towing races and/or pulling up the Cascades or Olympics, so My point is how well do you want to tow.

Is it a DD? then 3.73
How often are you towing? A lot 4.10
Mountains a lot? 4.10

But you have to map out your variables.

I used to live in Snohomish and those hills can get pretty big :)

the only way i would buy a 2500 hemi is with 4.10's, but thats just me. what gears are in your 1500? if you have 3.92's, then your probably not going to like 3.73's in the 2500.

Yeah, it will be mostly DD.

I have the 3.55 now, and whatever TT we get it will be in that range no more than 10,000lbs. Thanks for the info, so now I'm getting a little more confident on what I'm going with, they have the kind I think that I might go for at the dealer. I will be going there to try it out and I just need to clear it with the wife.

The logic of 3.73s yielding better MPG is sound, but reality... I dunno.

A 2500 (crew cab 4x4?) is a WHOLE LOT of truck to get going. I have a 5.7 3.73 Crew Cab 4x and MAN, it could use 4.1 if not 4.56s. And that's with the pathetically tiny 245/70R17s.

If it's an option, I'd get moar gear!

Just my .02- if you're going 2500, fuel economy isn't first on your mind and from the previous conversations you want it for towing. I'd go 4.10 to compensate for the extra mass vs torque if it's an option. Not so important with the CTD, more important with a gasser IMHO. The final drive won't be that much of a spread but you'll be geared to tow an apartment block. Better to have it and not need it...

If you're only towing 8K every once in a while, stay with your 1500 or get a 1500 w/ 3.92 gears. It will tow very well (but as Fran said, you won't win uphill races) and as a DD the 1500 provides more comfort and better fuel economy.

If most of your daily driving is highway, then 3.73's MIGHT get you better mpg's. If you do a lot of in town, for sure 4.10's would be better suited. Even so, with the final drive on the trans your not going to gain much with 3.73's on the highway. Power wise, the 4.10's in the 2500 are going to feel similar to the 3.55's in the 1500.

You'll never regret getting the 4.10's, you might regret getting the 3.73's.

4.10s- no question. Like the others said, with that much mass to get going with a gas engine, you need gears to getcha going, and keep a trailer up to speed. It's not just hills, it's off-ramps and everything.
Do some reading about gear spread and real world MPG and you'll find the difference is not as big as you'd think. And it's worth it.

Another for 4.10s.

In a 2500, they'll yield better MPG as your transmission won't be hunting for gears on grades as it will keep the engine RPM closer to your torque peak.

I know that I will have to order it then because the dealer don't have any 4.10, it just as well so I not ready as of yet.

I was thinking about this but I also was thinking that the 1500 payload is only about 1100lbs, and with two people, gears that will get really close.

I would have chosen 4.10's in our 1500 if it were an option, even if the towing/payload limits were the same.

Seems like dealers never have the better optioned gears on the lot. I got lucky when mine had 3.92s, too bad I couldn't have been happy with them. lol

Definitely go 4.10s for towing, no question about it, even if it means ordering. And...if you're not in a hurry for a truck, ordering is the way to go IMO. Get the truck exactly the way you want it, and don't pay for anything you don't want. You'll still get all the rebates, and you can always back out of it without penalty when it shows up if you change your mind. Win-win in my book.

I'm going to let the dealer know next week that I want to order one with the 4.10 or maybe the one that's coming will have it, I doubt it those.

I think that I'm going to start a war between dealership and tell the dealer that this other dealer can get me what I want.:D
