I was reading this thread when i came across your vvt issue. I know it was with 30 weight. But what brand? RL? Or somthing else?

At the time, if I remember correctly it was 5/30 blend from the dealer. 4 or 5 qts of the 5w-30 and 2 or 3 qts of the 5w-20 was the mix I was using, so I wasn't even a full pan of 5w-30.

I had bought an oil change package for my old truck (that took 5/30) and had a bunch of oil changes left over near it's expiration. So I just went in every month and had them give me the oil and filter.
I think at that point they had switched over to the blend, but it may have still been conventional.

In general, a 5-30 in TX, FL, etc. will be thinner than an 5-20 in MN, MT or Canada at most times.

Forget CAFE, use your intellect and choose what fits your climate the best.

It would seem resonable to assume that the Manufacturer wants your vehicle to last beyond the warranty period for purely economic reasons. His. If it became known that dodges were crapping out right after the warranty expires it would affect future sales.

The 2018 Owners manual says that 5w20 is recommended but that you can also use 5w30 when 5w20 is not available.

Synthetic vs conventional. The owners manual mentions Shell Helix which is a full synthetic. Pennzoil oil type is not specified, Pennzoil makes both types of oil. ILSAC GF-5 from what I can gather meets the Chrysler spec. Walmart's Super Tech Full Synthetic claims to meet the ILSAC GF-5 spec on the bottle.

So Wife has a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 3.6 V6 (book says 0w 20)
And I have 2023 Ram 1500 Classic with 3.6 V6 (book says 5w 20)

Why? Engines are the exact same 3.6L V6 24V VVT Engine and 8–Speed Automatic 850RE Transmission.

She has a 3.27 rear gear and I am 3.21

no issues but curious on why they need different weighted oils? both use same oil filter. what gives?

Edit.
After rereading the manual for the Ram it also says 0w 20 but the oil cap says 5w 20.
where the Jeep GC manual says 0w 20 as does the cap 0w 20

Part 2

0w 20 or 5w 20 or 5w 30

So Mopar.com Ram 1500 Classic 3.6 vs what dealer sent to me at purchase (PDF of manual)

mopar online ram manual.JPG oil for ram.JPG
Two sources for same truck config with 2 different reco's and one with an option...

clear as mud but for a June/2023 built 1500 Classic with 3.6 5w 30 is OK.

What say you?

The Pentastar 3.6 will handle 5W30 just fine. Our 2013 Jeep Wrangler recommends 5W20 in the owner's manual and the cap but many Jeep guys are running 5W30.

Ours has had PUP 5W30 (a couple with just PP 5W30) since about the 3rd oil change. It has about 115,000 miles on it now with no rocker or head issues so far (knock on wood).

The last oil change was my "cleaning off the shelf" oil change with 3 PP 5W20 and 2 PUP 0W40 and 1 Redline 5W30 and it has been fine.

You can run any of those weights you listed but I prefer a 5W30.
