Looking at buying a toy hauler that has a gvwr of 13,500lbs.
I won’t max it out but 13,000lbs is likely.

I have an ‘18 6.4 with 4:10’s. If I’m not happy with the pulling performance I’m going to consider gears. I’m wondering if 4:56’s would put my first gear final ratio close to the new 8 speed?

after looking at the chart on the first page. I’m thinking 4:56 would be best. I tow at 60-65 tops. 4:88 might be to much?

how big of an improvement can I expect? If I’m going to spend $2500 I sure in the hell better notice it!

I’m on the west coast and pull some big hills. Cajon Pass and the hill from bishop to mammoth are the norm.

My TH is 14K GVW, 9800 dry.
I’ve had 20 gallons of fuel, a Maverick max, 2 dirt bikes, 80 gallons of water, and food for 6 people for 4 days loaded up. Towed from home(4500ft) a remote spot inthe mountains(7300ft) without any issues. I take it slow and easy towing.

The swap from 4.10 to 4.56 isn’t worth the expense. 4.88 should be the minimum if you’re thinking about upgrading.

Happy is a little strong. Barely adequate is closer. Given my experience 4.56 with be a waste, and I want 4.88s.

Not afraid of the RPM ideally I would want to be in fourth at 60-65mph. I was thinking the 4:88 might be to high and it would want to shift to fifth. Obviously I can lock out 5th and 6th.

I guess I could put in 4:88’s and if it’s to much rpm I could upgrade to 34’s.

Thats what I did, 4.88s and 34" tires. Towed around 8K on a trip over about 300 miles over the weekend and held 80mph just fine cruising down I-20 and Tx175, which gets a little hilly, and I didnt have to use T/H until I had to go through a town. I use this truck every day to commute 25 miles to work at 75mph, and never bat an eye about the 2200 RPM Im turning. The engine actually seems to like it better. Dont shy away from the 4.88s. You wont regret it.

You could get similar gearing to my setup, with an actual cruising overdrive with the 8 speed in the new ones. I do wish i had one more gear for flat highway cruising, but im happy with her for now, especially since it will be aid off in Feb.
