Anyone had any issues with building their engine having to much torque and destroying the 8 speed yet?

Is anyone building the zf8hp70 yet to handle more torque.

Are there any other upgrades available for the transmission yet.

I have not seen anything on any of the major sites.

I don't think anybody makes parts for the 8 speed yet or added any real power adders. It will probably be a little longer before something happens

I think to begin with the 8 speed in pretty stout. Just look at what other cars it's used in.

Unless someones is adding Twin Turbos pushing 1000HP+. There really is no need to make it better.

Hell the Bentley Continental Flying Spur has 600HP and 533tq...

the Bentley uses a different transmission that's the zf8hp90 we have the zf8hp70. the 8hp90 will handle about 634 ft lbs of torque while the 8hp70 only just over 516 ft lbs while to most everyone they will be fine with staying under this number those that want more aren't.

I just thinking that with simple bolt on parts were going to be pushing the limits of how much torque the trans will handle and that's never fun. :Nonono:

adding a supercharger at 1.5 bar and you are over the 516... 1.5 bar is 610.5 ft lbs of tq that's just adding a supercharger at just 7.35 psi. That's math not real world it should be accurate unless there are other variables.

all ZF 8's are most certainly not created equal
it will be quite a while before anyone will be running boost on one to truely test the limits of the Ram version though.
Seems no one has even offered a tuned boost package for the 2012 6 speeds yet.

Well I wouldn't use the word different really. The zf8hp90 probably has some stronger internals. So with that said. Maybe we need to figure what exact parts are better.

That's like saying the 4L60 and 4L80 is different. Very similar just the 4L80 can handle more power.

But... That's like saying the t56 and the tr6060 are the same that a big block is a big block because it uses the same block. Not to throw you under the bus.

I agree but if you work on cars you know automatic transmission's are complicated. I may be able to rebuild one but I don't want to do it. I'll leave that to people who have more patients and that don't use my favorite tool (BFH). :beatdeadhorse5:

Oh hell yeah there complicated. I've seen my grand prix trans torn down when I blew it up. I wouldn't even attempt to try and rebuild it my self.

I threw my 545RFE on the bench and gutted it like a Fish!

Easiest thing on my Ram I've done to date,
and I've done a LOT! (100% DIY)

BBerry897_zpsbe6325c1.jpg

more pic's here: http://www.ramforum.com/f44/boost_cam_gears_etc_whats_my_options-46604/index2.html

Only tools needed were a couple metric sockets
and two flat blade screwdrivers for the snap rings.

Replaced several clutch packs that had burned up frictions and steels
Less than an hour for my first time, the next one will take 10 minutes.

In case it wasn't obvious,
I had to put it back together too.
Reverse order it came out, simple!

It only goes back together one way correctly.
If you screw up the order, the snap rings won't align properly with the grooves. in the housings/drums.

I have never done this before.

It was a dead trans anyway, so I had nothing to lose but time.

Yeah, it was obvious smart guy
But isn't there a lot of little parts?

and just what you said about snap rings. I didn't know that...
Yeah, nothing to lose, but that's great if I rebuilt it, throw back in the truck and something wrong.

Little parts? Hell no, did you watch the youtube?
most of the frictions that get replaced are in the first drum assembly.
A few bolts and a couple snap rings and it's almost done!
Are you trying to make this more difficult than it has to be?
If you put a dead trans back together and it still doesnt work...you've lost nothing.

...and like I said , it goes back together in reverse order,
Hang your rings and pressure plates on a peg board above your bench.
If you miss a single bearing or clutch plate position, you wont get it to fit, final snap rings wont go on. Pull it out and try again.

All else fails, ATSG manuals available on ebay for $29

I got one just in case, never even used it lol.

I'm no mechanic by any stretch,
just someone who hates paying outrageous labor charges,
or having someone elses hands on my baby.

Anyone who gets to this level of performance better have some DIY skills
...or Very deep pockets.

yeah that transmission didn't look that hard at all.

I also didn't find anything about the zf on the Hughes page.

I don't know why everyone focuses so much on the engine and never upgrades the trans until it blows until they learn the hard way I guess.

X2

A built trans was in my plans the day I ordered my Ripp kit,
And the Ripp kit sat in my basement for two months until my built trans from L&M arrived.

As a drag racer I will always have two transmissions,
One in the truck and one on the bench with fresh frictions ready to replace it.
Cycle as required.

they really just take time and patients at first I'm still new with transmissions still don't like them but once I understand them more I can see it not being so bad. what took the guy in the video 38 mins would have taken me an hour ish but in reverse probably a few more to make sure everything was correct. snap-on air tools make my life easy though.

On Hughes website go to "Components" Tab and then down to "plates and steels"
The ZF8 is listed there.
