Yeah I'm not sure why they changed it for 2014. My 2013 manual has some pretty harsh language about "MDS equipped 5.7 Hemi MUST use 5w20 for proper functioning of the MDS system" or something to that effect...

My 2015 manual is identical to 2014 manual, except for the language allowing for 5w30 , if 5w20 is not available.
With this statement now have the green light to go with 5w30 with no worries.

Will OC to PYB 5w30.
Currently have 2k on 5w20 PP
UOA should be linear with engine hours
for Al, Fe, Cu ppm concentration.
So this OC will be drained at ~ 2k miles.
Will take only 3 weeks to log 2k miles
On PYB OC, then off to Blackrock.
All mileage is ~ 90% how at
I just received my oil sample kit today ! In a couple weeks I'm gonna take a sample @ 5,000 miles on Redline 5W - 30 on my 5.7L Hemi .
I'll be posting up the results here . And the Syn thread .

RLK make sure you fill the sample jar full, and make sure you add 10 bucks for TBN, take the sample a little warm, turn the truck on when cold and wait a minute and stop then get the oil. Ask black stone to leave your personal info off the PDF so you can post it easily.

After reading this thread and consulting with Syn & Burla. I too made the switch and joined the 5w-30 club!! However, what I didn't expect was what happened this morning! I switched out my oil from Platinum 5w-30 (with a Mopar filter) to Amsoil SS 5-30 (with a Royal Purple 20-820 filter), which is my go to combo (now no longer 5w-20). So what happens? My coolant temperature shot up from a rock solid 203 to a 203-208 and my oil temperature is still the same at 217! Any ideas?

Thanks!

For what it is worth! My coolant temps tend to float around those same temps. They never have stayed rock solid 203*F. I have seen steady temps of 198-209*F. All depends on ambient temps & how hard my 5.7L is pushed.

I honestly can't see a slight rise in oil viscosity to create havoc with the cooling temps.
I can assure you a 30Wt oil is not going to add any more if any at all engine friction or drag compared to a 20Wt to cause your coolant temperature to rise.

Just my Opinion!
I honestly don't know even if these digital dash gauges are an actual accurate reading. I thought Raven or Rod actually proved there to be a decent amount of descrepency.

If you are concerned/worried about a few degrees? next OCI switch back to 20Wt. At least give the 30Wt a decent chance-->Take it the full OCI.
I would actually favor a few more degrees in the winter months. (Just Me)...
To tell the truth I really never focus on coolant temps most my attention is on my Oil PSI / Temp along with Transmission temps which are effected by my coolant temps.

Kinda SUKS when a fella just can't enjoy driving anymore! Spends all the time worried and concerned about temperatures he just totally ignores the driving experience. I do that a lot.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was actually getting a rock steady 203 with the Platinum 5w-30 (and my 5w-20 Amsoil SS). Perhaps my temperature gauge went into a coma when reaching 203 and for whatever reason snapped out of it when I switched out my oil this morning (which makes absolutely no sense at all). At least my numbers correspond with yours!

There might be a few owners who are using Amsoil signature series 5W-30 that you can compare temps with.

I might be myself switching either to Pennzoil platinum or maybe Amsoil 5W-30 if Shell does not get the Pennzoil ultra platinum pricing and availability under control within the next year.

I've ran both Amsoil SS 5w30 and Redline 0w30 and my coolant temp was virtually identical to any 20wt I've ran which is around ~200* in the winter and ~208* in the summer.

Oil pressure was about the same as any 20wt but oil temps have been slightly lower running Redline 0w30.

Overall I haven't noticed much difference running a 30wt oil except my Hemi is nice and quiet and smooth.

I agree with Hemi395 .

Keep an open mind on the coolant temps .... the coolant temps are easily altered by several things ... such as type of fuel octain from one tank to another , a different gas stations quality of gas , outside air temperature , PCV sticking or finally opening from being stuck , an ageing water temperature transducer, uphill climbs or not , different oil wt used , adding a water wetter ( such as RMI-25 or equivalent ) OR simply an ageing thermostat. ...

I've run Amsoil SS and I didn't notice any difference in temp. What I did notice was it took longer to reach operating coolant temp. My Hemi if pretty quiet. These 5.7's are not the quietest motors between lifter and injector noise.

I wouldn't mine hearing from anyone using either 5w-20 or 5-30 to get an idea what everyone is averaging (2013 and above).

Syn, Amsoil SS rocks!! I drive a Smart Car (it feels like I'm going from a go-cart to the Queen Mary on steroids whenever I switch vehicles) that requires you to rev the engine to get going and after 10,000 miles I'm always at the full line.

The only variable I had was switching out my oil and filter. Nothing else

I ran a 40 wt in my MDS 5.7L Hemi over the summer ( over 6k) for a summer oil change interval (oci) and it ran incredibly quiet ! My pressures were only slightly increased .

No MDS issues at ALL !

Sorry just so many think running over a 20 wt the engine will Explode and kill everyone for miles around
