When Livinalittle posted :

He most certainly meant SPORT aluminum cast wheels,

...nobody said anything about crappy plastic chrome clad Express wheels

Perhaps you should take your own advice ...

or do what many do, myself included up until I found Real 13+ Sport wheels
and hit them with plasti-dip :)

FYI...what the chrome clad wheels look like under the plastic clad

decladwheel.jpg

declad1.jpg

and what they look like powder coated

Calm yourself, if I wanted black rims I would have gotten them and getting black rims is an easy option if you want and have the extra coin. Personally I like the chrome look on a black out package as it adds alittle bling. You got black rims… congrats now you have a fully blacked out ram just like about 10 people I saw today on my 2.5 mile commute to work today. Black rims also tends to make the truck look "dirty" all the time since usually the rims are shinier than the tires... unless you gloss your tires almost everyday. Chrome clad is a cheap and effective fix for chromed aluminum causing pitting and air leakage and compromising the rim strength... not to mention nasty looking. They can still be dipped or painted. But why would I want to be like everyone else.

LOL!

First, I am quite calm :)

I have 14' Sport Polished Aluminum wheels on my Black Sport.
I gave up on the "all black" look, IMHO as soon as they make it a factory option, it loses a LOT of it's appeal.

But you know what?....it looks just like every other Black 13'+ Sport on the road now.
...well almost, because mine's better :p

Second,
Your line about pitting/leaking/compromising wheel safety? LOL = complete ********.
The Chrome Clad option is pretty much the same solid aluminum wheel with just a plastic hub cap glued on part of the front of the face.

Leaking Solid Aluminum wheels?....seriously ??? *****!!!

Third,
If you want to talk about nasty looking...

He's what my original 10' chrome clads did after their FIRST Winter...4 years ago
(When Solid Polished Aluminum Sport Wheels were NOT even an Option)

c76155aa-12f2-4b29-b5ea-7395730ac252_zps4276fe72.jpg

Despite regular weekly washing,
the cheap thin tin foil like chrome cladding to the plastic hub cap
would succumb to the winter road salt/sand and start to bubble flake and peel.

They also scratch extremely easy, so be very careful when washing them.

It was funny that so many claimed chrome clad wheels would never rust, last forever
but there were a whole lot of us posting pictures that proved otherwise within a year.

There's several Ram Forums with hundreds of others who had the same issue.
Many were replaced under warranty, others were not so lucky (like me) and plasti-dip'd them black...works good for a Winter Wheel now.

10 years ago back in 2004, I had a choice between chrome clad or polished aluminum wheels for my Black Sport QC 4x4.
I chose polished and was glad to have them as they lasted for 5 brutal Winters and still looked like new when I traded it in.

Good Luck with your precious plastic express hub caps

:favorites13:

...but don't tell people they can't powdercoat their Sport wheels

Im not going to muck up this thread anymore… but the fact that you are COMPARING chrome clad to POLISHED aluminum is enuff said. They are not the same and therefore your comparing apples to oranges. Chrome plating aluminum is VERY VERY difficult, and the plastic CLAD will outlast a chrome plated aluminum wheel, since the chrome plastic might chip/flake but the ACTUALLY rim is UNTOUCHED and therefore not oxidizing… and the do create pinholes and look narley after a winter or too (chrome plated aluminum) or polished aluminum if you don't take care of them with regular cleaning/polishing and sealing. POLISHED aluminum will not shine as much as chrome and has a bluish tint to it, but its a BETTER finish/barrier than CHROME on an aluminum wheel. Polished will last a long time if its maintained and sealed regularly. CHROME aluminum rims are not an option by OEMs anymore due to the reason above. Chrome clad is also cheaper than polished aluminum for the OEMs to use and require less maintenance for the average guy who doesn't spend hours polishing and sealing his rims. Enjoy your 13 sport which has (your upgrades) what my express got from the factory. You have a nice truck not gona lie, I never said it wasn't. But your ranting about 2 different things that are not on the same playing field, which is…. "********".

LOL!

It's not even a 13' Sport

and you're not the only one I've fooled...
(Fog lights usually give it away)

My lowered 10' Sport 4x4 I bought almost 5 years ago,
Fully loaded with every option available at the time, (and still cheaper than a new 14' Express)

It just got a 14' face-lift recently
that started a few months ago...14' Sport wheels/ 14' Sport projector heads/ 14' Sport LED tails

Since it's bought and paid for already, I've had lots of free cash to throw at it...
(only has 25k miles on it , so its still like new to me)

What ever floats your boat man. Is a nice truck as stated, no idea the history of it or what the base model it "was", ill say it again for ya, NICE TRUCK! and it really is. But Built isn't the word Id use… sure its got some bolt ons but Its still a factory style bolt on part truck for the most part which is great. I reserve the term built for custom fabbed and unique. Turning wrenches is easy and so is bolting something up or on where its intended to fit. Original trans, rear and long/short block is not "built" but you got some work done on it and it looks good. Glad we got the "chrome" thing under control as thats what the discussion originally originated from.

Im sure a HID projector swap can be DIY… just gotta own it and get er done.

That looks insanely nice!

It definitely served its purpose for $40 worth of Dip :naughty:

If you hit your tires with tire shine you didn't have to be careful
not to get your wheels greasy....just do the whole thing and a quick wipe
with a sponge gave the PD'd wheels a nice satin gloss finish.

a couple more pic's for those interested (not betty)

The New 13+ Sport Wheels most certainly CAN be powdercoated
They are not plastic chrome clad like the old pre 13' Sport wheels , they are solid aluminum wheels.

My buddy MGRAM did his wife's 14' Sport 6 months ago

$400 includes media blasting and powdercoat
(center insert is the only plastic part, stripped and hand painted/cleared)

It's been through a few black transformations...currently working on 22s with 35 tires. I did have sport rims powdercoated and they looked great, but I wanted to run a wider tire.
