Ok so I really like my Thrush rattler on my 2009 ram, but I want to go full Muffler Delete. I need to have the muffler in to pass SMOG in California and it would be a nice gift to my family to not start my delete truck up at 4am every morning. I am installing a new set of HBS headers and a stock New Y-pip with Cats currently and want to see about doing this setup. Here are my thoughts:

JBA Headers - Stock Cats - Magnaflow Y-Piece - 3" Dual Valve Electric Cutout - Straight pipe and Muffler combo running side by side - Magnaflow Y-Piece - Stock Dual Pipes - No resonators - 5" Tips

Would i be ok as far as Exhaust taking the less restrictive route? Would this Vibrant muffler quiet the truck down enough to get close to the stock Quiet?

Other Options for the Muffler would be like:

Dynomax Super Turbo - I have heard good things about this one being quiet and still good Flow
Walker Quiet Flow - This one I don't have much info on, but the site has good info

Your bypassing the muffler with this drawing,it will be lo ud as can be. Exhaust will take path of least resistance.

Yes when the valve is open. I am going to use a dual valve cutout. Hoping the muffler will keep it quiet when I want it and then when I’m driving it and not on a long trip I can open her up :)

Most everyone that uses cut outs just dump them at the. cutout. I suppose what you have in mind may work, but it’s extra work. Let us know how it works out for you.

I'd really like to do something like this except I want to run true duals. Flowmaster sells a muffler kit called Flowfx thats a dual in dual out with a wireless cutout on one of the inlets then just dumps.

You potentially hurting flow with the cutout closed which will be 90% of your driving trust me.

flip the cutout and use a single butterfly one and put the muffler on the straight through side that’s open all the time. Flip the switch and a percentage of the exhaust will bypass the muffler which will give you some sound. Honestly you should just dump it off the valve but I get why your not. Seems like a lot of work for no real performance advantage of the cutout. A single 3” through a decent straight through perf core muffler will basically be no restriction and just take the edge off. You could run a big long one to knock off some DBs with the cutout closed. I have a cutout on my firebird with a turbo V8 and the cutout doesn’t get opened as much as you think but mine is performance necessary and I gain a a decent rwhp and decrease spool with it open.

mufflers I would recommend all straight through perf core.
1.) borla proXS or sportsman full 304SS
2.) Vibrant street power full 304SS
3.) dynomax ultra flow 409SS
4.) Jones max flow 409SS

I heard a few trucks with the Dynomax Super Turbo and they sound good. I just don't know how big I want to go.

Dynomax 17789 - 30" Body Round 3" in/out - $119
Dynomax 17743 - 14" Body Oval 3" in/out - $54
Dynomax 17698 - 18" Body Round 3" in/out - $102

I want Quiet but good performance

I am leaning towards 30" because it's bigger and would make it more quiet correct? :)

I put the Walker Quiet Flow on my Ram about a month ago. 1 in 2 out. I had a Carven on it previously. After about 3yrs I was over the Carven.
The Walker is definitely a quiet muffler! I noticed zero performance loss going from the Carven to the Walker. I actually think it’s more responsive with the Walker. It’s probably just in my head since I feel the acceleration now instead of hearing it.

It seems like you have a well-thought-out plan for your exhaust setup. Adding a 3 exhaust cutout to the system can give you more flexibility in controlling the exhaust flow and sound.

With the JBA Headers, Stock Cats, and Magnaflow Y-Piece, you're already taking a less restrictive route, which can help improve the performance and sound of your truck. The 3" Dual Valve Electric Cutout will allow you to switch between a louder, more aggressive sound when you want it (like when driving on the open road) and a quieter tone to be considerate of your family and neighbors.

The addition of the Vibrant muffler should help reduce the overall noise level and possibly bring it closer to the stock quiet. Vibrant mufflers are known for providing a balance between performance and sound attenuation, so it's a good choice for your setup.

Keep in mind that the final sound outcome will depend on various factors, including the specific muffler model, the exhaust pipe size and length, and how everything is installed. It's always a good idea to consult with an experienced exhaust specialist or mechanic who can fine-tune the setup for your preferences and to ensure it complies with California SMOG regulations.

Overall, your plan looks promising, and the 3" exhaust cutout should give you the ability to enjoy a powerful and exciting sound while still maintaining consideration for your family's peace of mind. Happy modding!
