Hey all, Will here. I was back under my truck today checking everything out before leaving for Elk hunting. Well, the front diff is wet looking. Seems to be leaking from the rear where the driveshaft connects. Would that be the pinion seal? Is it a do able project in the garage? Are there any special tools needed?

Specs:
2006 Ram 2500 HD 4x4
5.7L Hemi

Thanks you!
Will

If the leak is not bad, then it's probably best to just leave it alone. If it's not making a puddle in your driveway, just let it go and keep an eye on it. I would definitely check the gear oil level in the diff. The risk vs reward in this job is too risky. Unless you have the proper tools and knowledge of bearing preload, I wouldn't risk it.

Thank you for the info. No puddle or even any drops on the driveway. I'll just leave it alone for now.

Be sure to check the level. Also, if the axle has a vent hose, make sure it's not clogged/blocked. If the vent it blocked, the diff could be pressurizing, while you're driving around.

A correct level is that a little leaks out when the plug is removed right? Also where would i look for a vent?

The rubber hose in this pic is your vent hose. It will either have a one way valve on the end, or it might have nothing. You'll want to pull the hose off of the diff and blow light air through it, to make sure it's venting properly. You can use light compressed air, or just clean the end of the hose well, and put your mouth on it. Also, use a small screwdriver or wire to run through the fitting in the diff, to make sure it's not plugged with dirt, goop, etc. The video below is for a rear axle, but the front should be the same.

The pic below was taken from the 2006 Owner's Manual. For 2500, 1/4" +/- from the fill hole. So, right at the fill hole, or 1/4" below is acceptable.
