While my v-6 uses regular, based on various trusted sources, i use the mid grade for small engines - chain saws, lawn tractors, lawn mowers, out board motors, wood splitter, weed wacker, leaf blower.

In my town, my go to station is Mobil, a top tier gasoline that has the detergent additives necessary for contemporary engines. Currently, these are Mobil prices at the station- $3.19 regular, $4.04 mid, $4.44 premium. So 20 gallons of mid grade gas would cost $80.80. However, if i blend 10 gallons of regular ($31.90) with 10 gallons of premium ($44.40) the cost would be $76.30, or a savings of $4.50.
$4.50 not a huge difference, but, it does add up.

Lowest priced Top Tier 89 octane gas price: $3.499 / gal
Costco Top Tier 91 octane gas price: $3.399 / gal

From Gas Buddy App just now.

That is all.

Well, our dictator ******* has banished all fuel in any form from being pure, especially premium... add in the ethanol...

As for 89 at the pumps.... blended at the pump and IMPO not worth the spend.
Pay for 91+ and be done with it.

The HEMI works better on 91, just my $0.02.

Down here it was agrilobby corporations like ADM that bribed our govt reps to mandate alcohol in gas, and made us pay it from general tax fund so we couldn't see the discrete tax.
Legalized bribes. I saw it all in the 90s I side the engine biz.
Our organization, the Engine Manufacturers Association, couldn't match the bribes.

I don't understand why people use a charge card, i see service stations that charge ten cents for every gallon pumped, that they charge for charge cards.
Some stations charge ten cents extra for regular & twenty cents a gallon for Mid Grade.

Over in Yuma Arizona, the Arco station that i use, charges 30 cents per use of a card. Insert the card & get $75 of fuel & they charge your charge card only 30 cents for using the card.
That station is full almost 24 hours a day

Haven't seen that yet in flyover country up here, GT. I suppose that's coming soon as they upgrade all the pumps.

That'll be interesting for the youngers that don't know what cash is. Unless Debit Cards are exempt.

as far as i have seen, that extra charge is for any card.
If there is paperwork to do, they slap a charge on it.

My bank account is with a credit union, so i use any credit union to make cash withdrawals, or if i use a banks ATM, i get charged a fee, sometimes that fee is as much as $2.00.
From what i hear, the Casino's ATMs, charge a bunch to get cash.
There are several Native American Casinos close by.

MGM Grand charges something like $14.99 to use their ATMs. Forget the actual cost, but, it is around that amount. OTher casinos charge different amounts, usually6 $6-$10 or so.

I read the same article today.

How much did you save? Compare what you paid to mix half and half. Then multiply the gallons pumped times the mid grade price.

Not worth the time to save a few nickels, to me.

Of more importance is how the engine responds to gas that is NOT mid grade. Advertised mid grade is a blend of low and high octane. The molecules don't cancel each other out. Low octane combusts earlier, high octane combusts later.
My hypothesis is it's better than low octane, but not as good as a real mid grade.

My plan this summer is to fill up on high grade octane at Costco during off-peak customer hours. Here that is before 9 AM and after 6 PM. Otherwise the waiting lines are long and often backed up out into the street. Not convenient for a full size truck driver.
There is no tank in the ground for mid grade, it is mixed at the pump from regular and premium.

Here, Costco Premium is cheaper than Mid-Grade anywhere else. It is 14 cents a litre more than regular, or about 50 cents a U.S. gallon. I would just buy Premium and forget about mixing. Other option is to fill with Premium every second fill, I never let my tank drop below 1/2, and you end up with mid-grade without having to do two transactions.

source:

"The degree of difference in heat produced by burning a higher octane rated fuel is not that different; metals in the engine have quite a high tolerance. The higher octane rating means that the fuel explodes *sooner*, not *hotter*. This means that you get more fuel efficient – as less fuel is needed for the same amount of power. Most modern cars (i.e. since fuel injection) will adjust the fuel input accordingly.

However! the net benefit is only 5% or so, so you’d have to look at if you can afford it the difference.

The other possible advantage is that the premium fuel has been filtered & processed better, so it’s cleaner and overall better for your engine."

Don't believe everything you read. His Octane info is wrong.

Well.....lots of interesting comments and opinions. Here's what I do.....RAM gets 89 mostly....I fill up at Fred Myers.....not top tier. No knocks....all is well. Used to use their 87 in my Chevy Vortec 6.0......never had a problem....sold the truck at 190,000 miles. For my yards tools......I use 87 octane Union 76 (local station). I have a 20 yr. old JD LT180 mower.....a 18 yr. old DR brush hog......several Stihl products....all at least 15 yrs old including a blower and a hedge trimmer and a Echo chain saw. Never had a fuel problem with any of these tools. Works for me.

My son drives a tanker, delivering gas and diesel to many fuel vendors in this area. Until he told me this, I was not aware of it. They deliver two grades of gas, 87 octane and 93 octane. If someone buys the middle grade, they are mixed.

That's almost $0.23/per gallon....I'm cheap and would do something like that to save that much. Will say I just use regular old 87 octane, but just out of curiosity will keep an eye on this. Also wonder if this is more of a regional type thing or certain stations do it more? Locally it's still not any different mid grade vs. 50/50 mix.

I don't waste money on mid grade fuel. I use 87 octain in my 2020 Ram 1500 5.7 with no issue. I tested runing 89 compared to 87 with very little or no difference in fuel economy or power. I expected to feel a difference with the higher octain but it wasn't enough to distinguish between them other than price. I have almost 70- k on it now with zero issues of any kind, I have the oil changed every 4 thousand miles at my dealership keep the air filter clean and changed out as required rotate tires at every oil change and keep psi at 36 and have no complaints. I'm sure some will say you don't need to chang oil as often as I do but I purchase three oil changes at a time from Ram which makes my oil change and service cost 58.00 per change including full synthetic, mopar oil filter topping off all fluids and tire rotation. Can't beat that!

I have only 2000 miles but have only run 87. Seems fine, no towing. Where I am in TN , most stations have cash/charge same price.

The blending pumps always err on the high side. There are substantial fines if they get caught blending on the low side. Octane inhibits the fuel from detonation. Regular grade will release more energy but it is prone to randomly detonating at higher compression. Put the lowest octane fuel your engine can tolerate, if it's too low you should hear engine knock. That said if you don't hear any knock no matter the grade of fuel or load on the engine, stick to the numbers in the manual. Hope someone finds this helpful.
