JL is nice, sounds great and costs a LOT - but if he can get good deals on it, go for it.

I'd love to run JL, but I'll stick with my refurbed Kickers.......

Virtually all of the name brands will perform very well. I would look at the tech specs, of all of the major brands, before I would buy JL. A grand isn't going to get you far with JL; I paid a grand for my whole system (Kenwood head unit, Infinity components, Infinity subs, Profile amps, Tsunami cap, and wiring).

I'm going to have a bazillion questions as I try and pick stuff out. I listen to all kinds of music. Rock, alternative, metal and country mostly. But, I still like to go back and listen to the crap rap that I grew up on, Dre, Snoop, cypress hill. My biggest thing is when I'm jammin' Metallica and Lars is kickin' the **** out of the kick drum....I want to feel that. So, first sub question....2 ohm or 4 ohm????

i had a JL 10W3v2 and it was awesome. I agree that JL tends to be expensive.

you gotta pay to play! It is very expensive if you price some of it at crutchfield....I'm thinking I can do pretty good through this guy who can get me dealer prices. He also mentioned that he has tons of open box items in new condition that he would sell way under dealer cost. His speacialty is doing installs in boats and yahts up on lake michigan. Last weekend he did a $45000.00 Audio/Video install for some fat cat investor. I want to stay fairly simple here. I'm thinking a component system for front door/6.5 for rear door all powered by same amp. Then probably just a single 10" sub/Amp. All these specs are just confusing the heck out of me though 2 ohm vs 4ohm. Dual voice coil subs. Making my head hurt.

LOL, it is.

Here is the best way I can explain ohm ratings and crap:

Lets say you have an oven, and that oven gives you the choice of plugged it in via a 120 plug or a 220 plug. Options are nice right? Well, the 120V plug will only allow the oven to get to 300 degrees. the 220 will take you to 600. Use that same "logic" - your amp is your oven. Your subs are your "plug" - depending on how you wire them up, you can get more wattage to your subs (assuming they can take it!)

I know its kind of a jacked up way to look at it.........but hey, it makes sense to me. LOL

oh, and if that same oven allowed you to plug in 2 220V connections, you could get 1200 degrees out of that *****! :D

JL is good but certainly not the best. They're extremely commercialized. Theyve done an amazing job marketing to shows and stuff so their product is promoted a lot. Theyre on all the shows not because they're the best but because they sponsor the shows.

Personally I'm not a fan of jl but a lot of people are. Those that are, have you personally compared it to others or are you basing your recommendations on it being your first system and it sounds better than stock?

Just because its high priced doesn't mean its the best.

I've had Fosgate, kicker, and JL subs. Liked all of them. If you buy a quality sub from most of the manufacturers it will be good. Of course if you buy the bargain line sub its not going to perform as well.

i had an older kicker kx600.1. It was pushing 300 watts because the sub I had was a 2ohm DVC. I had the sub in a hotbox in my truck and I loved it.

spend the vast majority of your speakers on your front doors. the rears should just be for fill, and you really shouldnt even be able to hear them that well. they mess with the sound stage big time. whens the last time you were at a concert where they played behind you?

components up front
