In case anyone doesn’t know there is a plastic seal between the cab and the bed right above the gas tank/frame/muffler and it’s job is to keep water and leaves etc off of the hot muffler and the fuel tank sending unit/fuel lines. The problem is the seal is a ribbed plastic and it is constantly pressing against the cab paint and as the bed and cab move it will wear through the paint and cause a nasty rust spot and then hole. Here’s my attempt to fix it.
On my 14 I noted a good bit of wear before trading her in but told myself I would mod this to my new Truck before it became a problem. I removed the plastic which is held in with 5 or 6 ribbed plastic trim plugs (not fun to get out with the little bit of room available). I noted where it was curling before I removed it so I knew where to cut it after. It was easy to trim with a sharp razor. After trimming I used some garage door bottom seal to fill the gap and to keep it sealed against the cab but uses a softer material. The door seal is EPDM material so it’s designed for both cold and hot and should last a long time. I used 2 strips of 3M double sided adhesive and cleaned both the plastic and foam with alcohol so it would stick well. I attached the 2 and then reinstalled. The new rubber foam seal seals great against the cab paint and over a larger area plus it seals lower so it’s also much easier to clean.
Overall it was an easy mod once you get the peice out and I hope this solves the problem. The soft rubber/foam should be easier to clean under as well.
First pic the 2 Black peices on the left side was the original plastic seal cut already.
