In case anyone doesn’t know there is a plastic seal between the cab and the bed right above the gas tank/frame/muffler and it’s job is to keep water and leaves etc off of the hot muffler and the fuel tank sending unit/fuel lines. The problem is the seal is a ribbed plastic and it is constantly pressing against the cab paint and as the bed and cab move it will wear through the paint and cause a nasty rust spot and then hole. Here’s my attempt to fix it.

On my 14 I noted a good bit of wear before trading her in but told myself I would mod this to my new Truck before it became a problem. I removed the plastic which is held in with 5 or 6 ribbed plastic trim plugs (not fun to get out with the little bit of room available). I noted where it was curling before I removed it so I knew where to cut it after. It was easy to trim with a sharp razor. After trimming I used some garage door bottom seal to fill the gap and to keep it sealed against the cab but uses a softer material. The door seal is EPDM material so it’s designed for both cold and hot and should last a long time. I used 2 strips of 3M double sided adhesive and cleaned both the plastic and foam with alcohol so it would stick well. I attached the 2 and then reinstalled. The new rubber foam seal seals great against the cab paint and over a larger area plus it seals lower so it’s also much easier to clean.

Overall it was an easy mod once you get the peice out and I hope this solves the problem. The soft rubber/foam should be easier to clean under as well.

First pic the 2 Black peices on the left side was the original plastic seal cut already.

Here are some pics of the wear mark already caused (light whiteish line) the truck only has 550ish miles. It mostly whipes off, whiped part is to the left of the finger, right to fingers is the mark before wiping (more salt than wear) but there is still a light wear mark even with such little mileage.

I've removed mine last autumn with the intention of fixing it, but didn't so it's still off. My plan was to get some teflon tape on the cab to protect the paint and resintall the weather strip. I like your fix and might do this instead.

Did you notice any thing with it off? When i yanked it I could see the top of the fuel tank and the sender/pump hander/fuel lines are fully exposed to the outside. I would hate for water to sit on that and pool eventually leak down into the tank and be a huge mess. But then again the slot between the bed and cab is so narrow that really how much can get in there. But I will say just a week or 2 ago we got about 6" of snow and windy and the snow piled up on top of that seal/flap and stayed there for over a week till it got warm enough to melt.

putting something on the cab was an idea of mine as well... till i tried to get the plastic seal off. As you already know... no frigin room to do anything there. I even left off one of the plastic tabs (hardest one to get off) so If I needed to yank it agian it would be easier for me lol. In reality Ram should have put something there to help at least. They did it on random edges of the back bumper (clear film) why not there...

I took mine off the day I got my truck...its been 15 months without it. The truck sits outside all the time, but no problems at all. No leaf or snow build up.

I think I found one of the reason they put it there

Never had this much junk coming in when it was on. ab732dc8b178dbad2876daa979599182.jpg

I wonder if you could filter that cab vent? If you try, be careful not to plug it. I've heard of windows shattering when those get plugged up.

I thought the main reason was for the dual exhaust - preventing that from being sucked up under the truck slower speeds and then brought back up between the cab and bed - and finally being sucked in through the rear slider window...

The seal is below that vent. It could be something where if it’s missing the open space will create pressure zone or something and force it through the vent or opposite dunno.

Could also be the exhaust thing. Or it could be that it keeps crap from getting on the fuel tank sender and all the crap under it.
