Son just got a 2012 Ram 1500 SLT, looking for a tool box - shallow. Just looking to get some opinions and maybe god locations. He found one at Lowes (Kobalt) but I told him to look around..

I have the shallow Kobalt toolbox from lowes. Haven't had an issue with it. Works like it should.

I have an "in bed" tool box that works pretty well for what I need.

If you are going to keep expensive tools in there all the time Weatherguard is the only way to go. The steel RKI are ok but super heavy and the locks aren't as good.

Kobalt here.

No issues, just have to hit all the moving parts with lube every few months, and I had to make an adjustment (tightened)on the lock the other day.

Ive had a husky box, and I think this is my 3rd or 4th Kobalt. Convenient, and the mounting kit works perfect.

Tractor Supply box would be cooler though.

Weather Guard

Weather Guard has the best boxes on the market. Here's why...

They have tamper resistant retracting locks

90-degree cover opening for easy access

12V access for electrical up-fits

Automotive style latch for one touch opening

crimp-free/drill-free install mounting brackets with full weather seal

Take a look here.

On my last truck I got a weatherguard, will never use anything else again. I've had many truck boxes over the years (Craftsman, Challenger, etc...) and some are better than others. But the Weatherguard box was superior in every way. I'm sure there are other companies out there that make good quality boxes too, but in my area it is Weatherguard, then the rest of the lower quality ones. I will not be putting a box in my new truck though, got the Ramboxes so I won't have to take up bed space with a box. Hopefully it will work out for me :)
