Hello

We recently purchased a 2018 Ram 1500 eco diesel 4x4 crew cab. The GVWR is 6950 as per the door sticker. There is no payload information on the sticker

Published data from Dodge indicates that the payload for this configuration is 1270 pounds

To our surprise we weighed our truck yesterday and it was 6120 pounds, making the payload 830 pounds. we bought the truck to haul a lightweight, 3900 pound trailer

The math doesn’t work for us with the 366 pound hitch weight, 2 labs, and two adults, and gear. We figure we need at least 1000 pounds. Of course we assumed we were good as we believed we had 1270 pounds as the payload

What we’re trying to figure out now is where the discrepancy is? We have Ram boxes, a spray in liner, full size spare, and winter tires with steel rims

We would appreciate insight into where we went wrong. At this point we will need to forgo the trailer or sell the truck and buy a much more expensive 2500

I would go to this link and and select "lookup my vehicle" and then copy/paste your vin. It will tell you your trucks towing/payload capacity. 830 pounds would be the lowest payload I've seen on here, even the new 5th gen fully loaded limiteds are still in the 900/1000+ range.

Also on that last note, you've posted in the 5th gen (2019+) section and should still get some good responses here, but if not, you may want to put this over in the 4th gen section as well. Let us know what that towing/payload link say though.

Thanks so much

We put in the VIN and it said can’t be found. Maybe because we’re in Canada

Sometimes the payload is on the tire sticker, it says something like occupants and cargo should not exceed XXXX

My 2500 is supposed to have a curb weight of 6900 pounds. I ran it across the scales with me, the winch, canopy and a full tank of gas it scales at 8200. Me, winch and canopy should be 900 lbs, no idea where the extra 400 pounds is from. I am not sure where Dodge gets their curb weights from but they are usually far lower than actual. Since GVWR minus Curb Weight is what gives you payload, the actual payload is quite a bit smaller than the published most every time.

That said, you have the truck weight and the GVWR so you have your answer. Also upon weighing the truck were you full on fuel? If not that number goes down more

The Vin lookup on the Ram website does not work if the truck did not originally come with a hitch from the factory, My '19 had the electric brake package, 3.92 gears but did not come with the hitch receiver. I installed a Class 5 myself. However, the info is on the tire sticker not on the the other monroney label., here is mine, I'm also Canadian.

something doesnt sound right. my '19 laramie weighs 5776# giving me 1324# per the door sticker. I thought the ecodsl was about 100# lighter than the models with the 5.7 v8 so I'm thinking you should be in the 1200# range unless a higher trim level than laramie.

Agreed but no matter what any sticker says he weighed his truck and it was 6120.

We found it just now. And yes, it does actually say not to exceed 850 pounds. Unbelievable. We bought it to tow the new trailer and not looks like we're going to be truck shopping for a 2500. I have never heard of a payload so low. Because we didn't notice it on the sticker we relied on information on the Dodge website, which probably didn't take into account the different trim levels. Ours is a Laramie

Air suspension? That Laramie is hundreds heavier than my 2020 Limited Hemi.

And technically you could just look for a lighter 1500, unless you need all the fancy. I am looking at a Big Horn right now that has 1675 payload

A 2500 to tow a 3900Lb trailer? I guess if you want to stick with a diesel then a 2500 but a 1500 with a gas engine would be more than enough for that trailer and payload.

Maybe we need to go back to the drawing board on this. We have two, sometimes 3 dogs, so we need a payload of at least 1200 pounds if we need to carry any 'stuff'

A hemi 1500 would likely work

What he is saying, and I agree with him, is I would hook the truck to the trailer and take it for a run. My bet is you will never know it is there. If it sags a bit in the rear, worst you would have to do is a set of airbags. Way cheaper than swapping out trucks. I am one who usually recommends staying pretty close to manufactuure recommendation, but a 4000 pound trailer is basically the same as pulling a decent fiberglass fishing boat, and I have never seen a 1500 pickup that could not do that very easily.

Interesting thank you! My husband suggests taking off the trailgate, the spare tire and the back seats. We are using a platform for the dogs back there and the seats have been up since we bought it. I thought he was crazy. Maybe not...
