I am a new member. I am getting ready to buy a 2000 Dodge Ram 4x4 with a 5.9 gas engine and automatic tranny. It has 3:92 gears right now and I am thinking of changing to 3:55 to try and increase fuel mileage. Can anybody tell me if that would make much difference? I am looking for fuel economy and not worried about towing. I won't be doing much towing at all and then it would only be local. I am also going to put on a free flow air intake and a throttle body spacer which I understand should help. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel economy would go down, actually.
Throttle body spacers are paper weights. There is literally nothing you can do to these trucks to increase gas mileage. 14 is the best they'll ever get.

The only thing you can really do is avoid smashing the pedal down as much as you can. It wont increase MPG but it will help cut down the number of times you fill up in a month.

Keep the 3.92s and don't get a tb spacer. As DD94 said they're paper weights and air intake really won't do much of anything on these trucks. If you still want an intake build the "Black Mamba CAI" in the DIY section of the forum. Best things to do for mileage would be do a good tune up, do the plenum if it hasn't been done, don't put on mud tires or even all terrains go for highway tires. Little things like this. A programmer to tune the computer can do you some good but with the price of one unless you have a decently long highway commute every day with it you won't make up the difference for quite some time.

Honestly, ultimately, if you want a hard working truck: get the Dodge.

If you want something that will get you good gas mileage, get a Chevy. I'm not even kidding.

Yep I was getting about 12-13 mpg with my 2500 360 when gas was 3.50 a gallon. Now that it's at 2.00 I'm getting about 9 :roflsquared:

70mph 36 miles up 36 back of interstate driving with maybe a 1 mile of city. Thats my daily commute. Trucks loving this 91 octane tune too. Lot more power than I had before especially mid to high range and on the highway mileage is slightly up. City mileage died tho lol.

keep the gears, get a tune up, and make sure your tires are properly inflated at all times!

I used to average 11.5 in mine with pretty much shot exhaust. After a cat-back job, I got 12 even and that's even with a blown intake plenum.

Now I have an exhaust manifold leak and lost a little low-end, so I'm probably back to 11.5 again, LOL.

6 MPG myself. And I have gone the route of the Civic now. I'm still getting hell about it in the forums coffee house. Mainly from Dodge Dude..
