A few questions for you guys before I make my purchase.
I'm wanting a hydro blue sport 2wd crew cab Hemi with a 3.92 gear. But all I'm finding in my area have 3.21. I will be towing a 7,000lbs (Loaded) toy hauler from time to time with the truck. I do plan on adding air bags to rear and performance upgrades as well.

Is the 3.21 sufficient when towing?

Thanks for any help!
Shawn

Order exactly what you want, don't settle for what they have. I pulled a 6k with my 2011 3.21's and while it did work, my 2016 with 3.92's makes it seem effortless.

I pull this 28' BH with 3:21s and have zero problems doing it, crap I have all kinds of power left.
The 8sp is what makes it possible if it was not for that 3:21s would not work at all.

Now there us no question 3:92s will do better , really no replacement for the mechanical advantage you get with the lower gear. but for that weight they are not mandatory.

I understand the Hydro Blue is a limited edition color, and with it being a 2018 if you can get it for a sweetheart deal you can buy it and tow with it and if not satisfied you will be able to swap out the gearing to the 3.92

Or, if you really want to buy with 3.92 work that into the deal with the dealer to swap after signing on the dotted line.

I would get the gears you want but if only towing once or twice a year you will be fine with the 3.21's. The Regular Cab will have less weight to deal with but the steeper gears will be nice on inclines. I really wish the 3.55's were available with the Hemi and 8 speed, it would be perfect, IMO. That combo wasn't available when I ordered my truck.

The 3:21 gearing with the 8 seed is geared so that it will tow better than the 6 speed with 3:92. A new truck with the 8 speed and 3:21 will easily tow 7000 pounds.

Convert, for now.

small
I lifted mine and put 35's on it, and it still has ton of lowend. Id think a 3.21 is more than fine, IMHO

When you're not towing, the 3.92 is likely going to use a *little* more fuel per mile, especially at highway speeds. Around town in stop and go traffic, the 3.92 may actually do a bit better than the 3.21.

As others have said, the 3.21 should handle 7k lbs without issue, so if you do a lot of highway driving while not towing, I'd consider sticking with the 3.21.

Lastly though, the 3.92 is a bit punchier, as you'd expect, so it may be marginally more fun to drive (AND it pushes the towing capacity to over 10k I believe). Just some things to consider.

op what you worried about?

the 7k sounds like towing for the compact canyons and colorados

Depends where you live. Up north with hills I would go with 3:92
Down south where it is all flat, 3:21 should do fine.

Thank you for all your replies and info. I had test driven a 2017 with the 3.92 and like the feel of it even without towing. And luck have it, I have found a 2108 Hydro Blue with the options I was looking for and 3.92 gear as well. Heading down to ATL Saturday morning to make the purchase and drive it back.

Let the wish list for upgrades begin

Congrats on the truck. Last of the “classic” Rams in a great color. I had to go to Atlanta as well to find a max steel metallic 4X4.....more competition there too.

I wouldn't buy a truck w/o the 3.92 gears, my dealer found me one, you should talk to your sales person and give them a list of must haves on a hydro sport and let them find it. The 3.92's just make the truck so much fun to drive, towing or not.

Thanks you guys! Brought it home last night. I had looked around at most dealers in the South East and Landmark Dodge in ATL had the one with the options I wanted. Worth the drive and dealing with ATL traffic!

Congratulations! Send a pic ASAP! I can't wait to see what the future holds! Good to know the hemi will still be around in 2108.
