Just some friendly advice... most police departments use laser instead of radar. Not all do, and some smaller departments still use radar because its cheaper than laser.
Although some "radar" detectors also detect laser, they aren't nearly as reliable.
Radar systems are constantly turned on and sending out the radar signal to detect speed. Its pretty easy for a quality radar detector to pick up on that signal and alert you to the use of radar ahead, allowing you time to slow down.
A laser system is only turned on when the officer pulls the trigger, and only stays on for the amount of time that the trigger is pulled. When I ran laser, I would watch for a car that appeared to be speeding, aim the laser and pull the trigger for about 1 second (or less) to capture the speed... That was it.
A couple of things to consider about a detector of laser speed enforcement...
The laser is a very narrow beam... only a couple of feet wide at a thousand feet from the gun. This is much different from radar, that casts a wide beam of signal out that is easily picked up by a detector. Its highly unlikely for you to get notified of a laser signal until the officer has already tagged YOUR car. At that point, its just giving you advance warning to slow down for the ticket.
The other thing to consider is that a radar gun is always on, so you get a more positive warning from your detector. A laser gun is only on as long as I pull the trigger, so you get a brief blip of a warning. Those brief blips are often ignored by most drivers.
The best bet is to simply slow down. You don't get there much faster by speeding.
The next best bet is to simply pay attention and learn where officers sit. There were only certain places along the road that allowed a safe place to sit, a long enough straightaway to observe and estimate speeds and a safe area in which to effect a stop. I would bet that officers sit in roughly the same spot most of the time.
Waze is a good application to rely on other drivers to spot and scout out police officers as well.
All this said... your best bet is to save those couple hundred dollars and slow down a little bit. Arrive safe!
