soo my tool box is that chrome silver color and Ive been thinking of spraying it black for a while. SO.. i went out and bought some engine enamel out of hopes it will stick.. Gonna do a test sample. Anyone else have any ideas of what will stick to a toolbox?

ill post up some pics after im done if it works.

Maybe scuff it a little bit and clean it really well.
Plasti dip should hold to it or you could get bedliner which would probably hold up the best

^ +1, I think the regular spray paint will eventually peel off, it's hard to get it to stick without a lot of sanding

Thats what i did! I used the rustoleum bed liner stuff. I would go with the duplicolor stuff if i were to re do it but it has held up well through car washes and what not. Ill try and snap some pics of it after a year and moving it numerous times from my truck

right i was thinking bedliner as well but the dude at pepboys told me he sprayed his toolbox lime green with engine enamel and it hasnt peeled at all..so i figured id give it a shot. its made for sticking to metal and heat resistant (which i good for AZ lol) so hopefully it will work. im gonna clean it really well.. and hope for the best. worst comes to worse i can just bedline over it.

How ruff is your box? Might be able to sell it and just pick up the black version for a few extra bucks.

its not very rough.. thats the problem..its smooth and shiny so im hesitant..

but i did a tester..on my gas cap cover and it turned out pretty well..too bad the tool box isnt the same consistency

Idudes from pep boys are stupid haha
It might work pretty well, the high temp is a good idea I didn't even think of (it is 37* here haha)
Worst come to worst hit it with a pressure washer and take it all off

I'd do bedliner. I don't think that plasti dip would hold up as well on this application. Spray paint would work, but imo too much of a pita with prep etc.

Spray paint will NOT work unless you sand the box completely , and that is not going to happen unless you sand blast it as the box has those diamond cut designs .

Trust me .. I have tried this on older trucks .

The only thing that works and LASTS is sandblasting the box and using rhino liner .

The key is sanding all the little diamond cuts and box down to where stuff will stick , not easy unless sandblasted .

Save your money and time ... buy a black box

Agreed. Powder coating would be another option. But, would be cheaper to buy a new box.

Yep sell your box like I said earlier and pick up a black one, or find someone wanting to trade boxes.
