I had to pick up a load of flooring yesterday (100 mile round trip). Original plan was to split the load between my 2900# gross utility trailer and truck bed. Plans changed, load grew to about 4000#, so we borrowed a tandem axle trailer, which was a better plan anyway cause the tandem has brakes, my utility trailer does not. Trailer weighed a hefty 2000# empty, along with the 4000# cargo there was 6000# tow weight.
Previous discussions, I had listed the truck had 3/4" rear spacer added, then a set of AirLift 1000 bags, with final setup being 3/4" spacer removed and just the Air Bags remaining, being ran at 20-22PSI along with a set of Monroe Reflex rear shocks (which has resulted in much in much improved ride and handling).
Ended up pumping the air bags up to 25 PSI prior to picking up the trailer. I should've taken a picture, but the squat was minimal, just about leveled out. Front end is lifted 1.5", with the air bags installed and pumped to 20-22PSI, it still maintains about 1.25" rake unloaded.
Towing observations, truck has 3.21 gears. In tow/haul at 60 mph it did not want to shift above 6th gear ( direct 1.00 ratio) which is fine, 7th and 8th gear are deep overdrives and from my experience over the years, nothing kills a trans faster than heat build up from low engine RPM and increased stress running in overdrive. Even in 6th, it was running just under 2000 rpm, still pretty low. For comparison, I tried dropping it down to 5th for about 10 minutes ( which would be closer to running 3.92 gears in 6th) just to see what effect if any on temps, there was no noticeable change. For you guys running larger than 33" tires, maybe you need the deeper gears, my opinion, running 33" tall tires, 3.21's are plenty.
Coolant stayed at 200-206
Oil Temp was 220-225
Oil Pressure was 51 PSI (36 at idle IIRC), truck has 61,000 miles on it, approx 2400 hours.
Trans temp was 185
Fuel mileage was mid 14's.
I live in eastern PA, some rolling hills, nothing severe. Overall, I was impressed at the performance.
My truck weighs 5600# , with that 6000# load behind it, that was a combined weight of 11,600#.
