Transmission overheated - possibly still running above normal?

Hello, everyone!
This is my first post here and I'm hoping to get some ideas.
I'm pretty sure the answer will be to take it to the dealer, but I'm hoping to get at least some insight.
I'm okay mechanically so I suspect I'll understand most of any responses.

Sorry for the long post but here goes.

So. Just returned from a trip from Dallas, Texas to the smokey mountains in NC. Pulled a small trailer (open - not enclosed) with a motorcycle on it. Zero issues the entire trip there with and without the trailer, up and down the mountains twisty roads.

On the way back, at one stop having to accellerate hard to get ahead of the traffic with the trailer to make the highway entrance, it performed beautifully out accellerating the whole crowd with the trailer. Unfortunately, about 3-5 miles down the interstate, there began a whine, louder when downshifting up a hill. Suddenly, the transmission temp light illuminated. I checked the transmission temp and it read 275F. I slowed and found a dealer about 3 miles down the road. The temp began falling as I slowed and the light was off before I reached the dealer. Being a Saturday, there was little they could do that day.
The only "odd" thing I could find was that somehow the rubber plenum intake hose from the air filter box had almost pulled off, allowing unfiltered air to suck directly into the intake through the small opening between the intake neck and the hose. I loosened the clamp and shoved it back down and retightened the clamp.

Since the light had gone off, I let it cool a little longer and continued down the highway. The temps dropped to 215 (ambient temp was 95F) and basically stayed in that range the remainder of the drive that day. We stopped overnight and the next morning, drove basically the same way 75MPH, trans stayed at or below 200F with ambient temps in the 68-75F range.

Questions:
1. Do I need to see the dealer? Will it have a code they can pull and if so, what might it be?
2. Did the hard accelleration previous to the spike cause it - if so, how?
3. Could the plenum hose have anything to do with it?

Any other observations or thoughts I should consider? I have an extended warranty (only 56K miles).

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately its just a guessing game at this point. I'd drop the pan and change out the fluid and tranny filter at a minimum. Look inside the pan for signs of damage. Your truck being 4 years old I'd ask how many miles you got on it? When was the last time you changed the tranny fluid and filter?

If you decide to take it into the dealership, please let me know. I'd be glad to get this escalated and over to a Case Specialist for further handling.

I've only got 57K on the truck. Its my "spare" and "travel/hauling" vehicle. I am taking it to a local dealer to check Friday.

Another interesting update.
Yesterday, just city driving - empty, no trailer, but driving it semi - 'hard' - hard accelleration from stop signs, etc. I saw the transmission temp heat up to 248F (ambient temp was 85F). Oil and coolant were in the 200F range.
Later that evening, maybe a couple hours later, same truck, 78F, pulling trailer with motorcycle on it - never got above 205. Coolant and oil were both in this same range.
Seems there is a correlation between heavy accelleration and the trans temp - like it cant respond fast enough to open up the cooler valves under heavy accelleration - like a sensor isnt noticing and responding to ensure enough fluid is flowing through the radiator under heavy load.

Anybody ever wonder if the Ram Cares reps cut and paste comments like the OP's into a case file? I hate to be that guy but I've become a real cynical ****bird as I've progressed through adulthood lol.

I think he's talking about your grille shudders. If their closed you might not be getting enough air flow to the transmission cooler.

I guess I've never even paid attention to what the shutters do or how they function. I'm slowly learning more about all the systems this truck has to moderate/control temps.

Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but did we for certain determine if the OP has the 6 or 8spd trans? I'm fairly new to late model Ram world and I'm not even sure if the 6spd was a thing for a 2014 Hemi powered Ram like the OP has.

To the OP, do you have a dial or a lever to select gears?

I'm pretty sure its the 8. It has the dial selector.

If it is an 8 speed those temps are really high. I towed my 5500 pound travel trailer on the weekend and the trans stayed in the 180's the whole time. Outside temp was around 80F. Something is definitely not right. I would also suspect the active grill shutters or the thermal bypass valve in the trans. You can check to see if your shutters open at all by shinning a flashlight into the grill. I have noticed mine open up when the truck is not running. You should be able to find the trans cooler and see if it is hot after a drive too.
