Well...I just don't understand the big demand for a small diesel engine in the 1500. I know there are diesel purists who have been calling on it forever...If I am understanding what is being said about the VM V6, it produces about 240HP and 406FtLbs of TQ...which is cool...while the Hemi produces 395hp and 407FtLbs of TQ...I read where it uses 8.3L of fuel/100km...which is about 28mpg, but NOT in a 1/2 ton truck, I would assume.

I don't see the benefit of having a small diesel engine, with diesel being more expensive that gasoline.

But then again, maybe I am missing something here.

Fuel mileage will probably be in te 25-26 range (just my estimation, could e possibly as high as 28) with similar torque to a hemi and less horsepower
It will be a $3k option, possibly more

You might save 2-3 cents a mile so it'll pay for the cost of the option after 150k miles

Upside I less fuel consumption so the world will be able to drive for another day

If small diesels really took off here in North America like they did over in Europe, then I could see these being justified...but I just don't see them selling well.

No, the VM engine is a collaboration between Fiat and General Motors, I believe...I believe at one time it was Detroit Diesel...now, Fiat and GM split the company 50/50

Here's info on them from another site...

VM Motori, once owned by Detroit Diesel, is now owned 50/50 by General Motors and Fiat Powertrain.

I look forward to seeing these hit the road and see how it holds up. Might be an interesting option for my next truck in about 5 years. Really interested in seeing what the towing MPG will be...

I'm assuming its naturally aspirated? I didn't see anything about it being turbocharged

Biggest advantage would be more torque down low compared to our hemi engines.

From another site:

A single Garrett VGT 2056 turbocharger has variable turbine geometry. Compact and lightweight, the turbocharger provides near-instant response and includes an air-to-air intercooler.

I'm from Germany and for example the Ford Ranger is available as Diesel only there. Same with the Nissan Frontier. Nobody really uses Pickup Trucks for towing in Europe. Can't buy full size trucks either. Would be nice to have a Frontier Diesel here as a grocery getter, with the fuel mileage of a car. Even better if it was a Dodge. But a 1500? C'mon. Put it into the Dakota.

A flat torque curve and less fuel consumption
Although the hemi's due have a pretty broad torque curve compared to some others

Bumping this cause I had a brain fart about this last night in my dreams...lol

This could be a hit if they dumped the IFS on the 4x4 1500's and went to a 1/2 ton SFA...don't yall think?

If it had a turbo with those numbers... Then there would be a nice baseline to mod upon...

Read my post above...the current engine does hava a turbo. Now weather or not that will us it in the Ram is another story.

It would've been nice if they chose an updated version of the Cummins 4BT 3.9L... I don't have too much faith in a diesel that isn't in a straight line.
