Looking at a 2017 Sport with 40K miles. I'm curious to know what threshold yall like to be under for used truck mileage. (assuming the truck is in good-great condition)

I found my 2017 Sport with 24,000 and change miles from a local Ram dealership. Enjoyed my Ram since the winter of 2018.

:D I've bought vehicles with >300k miles on 'em... it comes down to luck and the previous owner.

Your 40k mile truck that you're looking at - good thing there is even if the previous owner did no maintenance at all, there isn't much other than oil changes it would have needed by now so you can start off good maintenance practices and expect a good long life from it.

It all boils down to was the truck maintained properly, IMHO.

My CTD only has 23K on it and I've had it just a few days shy of 3 years so that annual average is just over 7600 miles annually. I had my 2006 300 SRT8 for 12 years and put 56K miles on that one for an average of 4600 miles annually.

So for me if mileage averages over 10K per year I would pass it up.

But average mileage varies so much from area to area, and year to year, that it's hard to pin down a standard number. There are firms that track average mileage driven by area based on service and registration data. I believe insurance companies will charge higher rates for a vehicle that will be driven more miles than the average in your area.

Bottom line..for me a lower mileage vehicle would always be my first pick.

I used 40K miles as a max when I was looking in September.
I was lucky in that the one I bought only had 7k miles.

My 2015 has 132xxx miles on it. I bought it last February with 95,000.

I would do it again and again. These trucks need driven and worked. That's what they were designed for.

I got 119k on my 1500 and knock on wood, no major issues to date. But have been toying with getting something with lower mileage.

I would say the more important thing than mileage is price. And more important than that is options Set a price and find the lowest mileage with the options you want and that will be the deal.

I set my budget at 20k. Wanted 8 foot bed crew cab and 6.4l Hemi. Found it for 17900 and didn't concern myself with the mileage at all.

Too many stories of people buying new(my own experience) and the truck being in the garage more.

That is my thought on a max or min mileage search

I think with any use vehicle the smart thing to do is to take it to a mechanic and spend a couple hundred dollars to have them go through it and look at it. Low mileage can mean nothing if the truck was abused, higher mileage could be not an issue if the person was religious in all of the maintenance and up-keep and just drove it daily from garage to parking garage and back. Many, many years ago an acquaintance worked at a dealership that gave the used vehicles traded in to the junior members to drive so that they could acclimate themselves with the brands they. sold. He used to take the trucks out on the weekends and beat the heck out of them, take it to a car wash Sunday night and Monday it looked just like it did when it left the lot Friday afternoon. My point is low mileage and looking good are just two of many variables that go into determining if a vehicle is worth buying used, or not.

I would say 28,000 miles but who knows .One time got a used ram with 90,000 miles on it and it drove like a top till the day I traded it in. Good luck on your pick of a Ram truck.

It depends on its condition and what you plan on doing or needing a truck for . Usually I buy used with around 20,000 miles. Now I am retired so last July I bought a 17 with 39,599.00 miles being it was a sport , RCSB , luxury pkg, 3.92s ,8sp with many more bells and whistles than I normally get. Being retired I will probably drive it less than 5,000 miles per year so it will last a long time, probably longer than I will ever know.

Here are my general recommendations for buying used cars:
1) The fewer previous owners the better.
2) Service history
3) Perform VIN check (i use quickppsr.com)
4) Avoid low mileage cars as it usually means lots of town driving or lots of time being stood, neither of which are good for a car.

I've never been able to afford to buy a vehicle with less than 100k on it!
My limit is more about how many years it took to get there, too many years means too much sitting/ short trips and too few means it might not last long for me.
But I keep a vehicle for 200k+ till it falls apart.
