So my buddy and me cant figure out what this is. One end of its in a sensor it looks like on the top of the rear axle on the drivers side. and the other is just hanging free. I didnt notice it before so it must have disconnected just recently. My buddy thought it had to do with either like rear slip or something to that nature.

Just the vent tube for the rear differential. Should be clipped in somewhere up near the frame.

Should the end be pointing up or does it matter? And why higher?

Should be pointing up. Air is lighter then fluid. So that way it vents air.

If it's hanging down (below the axle), you could accidentally drain fluid.

You want it up high so **** don't contaminate your gear oil. It's supposed to be a one way valve to relieve pressure in the diff, but water and mud can get in if submerged.
