I'm doing a transmission upgrade/replacement right now. The rear main seal is bone dry. Truck is 2003 and has 108,000 miles on it. Should I replace or leave it alone????? If I replace, OEM, FELPRO or what brand is recommended??? I am doing all the work myself.

Thanks,

Kevin

If the rear main seal is dry and the seal around the oil pan is dry, I wouldn't touch it, you take a real chance of them leaking after you are back up and running.

I agree with HH, If it is not leaking leave it as is.

If on the other hand it is leaking, you may want to replace it. Felpro makes the OEM seals for Dodge so they would be a cheaper alternative to OEM while maintaining the quality.

Ok thanks. It is not leaking at all right now. Just didn't really want to touch it if I didn't have to.

Thanks,

Kevin

Change it. Go to the dealer and get an OEM one.

Install it properly and it won't leak.

I'm completely baffled at people who think a 12 year old seal with 108k miles on it is more trustworthy than a new, properly installed, OEM seal.

I had no leaks on my 2006 prior to my rebuild at 158K miles. I've had the oil pan off 3 times, replaced the windage tray twice and still have a small but annoying leak which I think is coming from my new rear main seal.

I have the rear main kit now. Are there any write-ups or how to's on installing the rear main? I can't seem to find anything. Do I have to drop the oil pan because I didn't get a new gasket for it.

Thanks,

Kevin
