I have always driven 2wd cars and as to be expect when I did gears I only had to buy one set of gears. With a 4X4 do you have to buy front and rear 4.10 gears or can I just buy one. My truck has the 2hi, 4hi, 4low, and 4lock options. Also whats the best place to buy gears? Thanks

Yes, you do have to buy front gears as well, otherwise your gear ratio in the front is different in rear. Somebody else might be able to confirm this and add some info.

You will need to do both the front and rear gears, or else you will not be able to use your 4wd without destroying the transfer case. If you only do the rear, then your rear tires will be spinning alot faster than the front which is a recipe for disaster.

Now for the bad part...Because you have a 2012, this is going to be a $2000-$3000 swap. You are going to need a new front axle and diff from an 09-11 because the ring gear on your current axle is welded to the carrier. Once you get the correct axle, then you will need the gears and an install kit. Then on the rear you have 2 options...run the factory RT 4.10 gears which bolt up fine, but are $370, or run the cheaper aftermarket Motive gears that are $195, but machine your carrier to accept these gears. In the end, the price is about the same either way on the rear.

Front axle - $500-$1000
Front Gears - $195
Front Install Kit - $209
Rear Factory 4.10's - $370
Rear Install Kit - $95
Labor for all - $600-$1000

As you can see, Dodge made it very difficult for the 2012 owners.

Both gears are needed if you ever plan to use 4x4. I've read if you don't ever plan on using 4x4, you can leave the driveshaft to the front disconnected, but that just seems like a horrible idea to me and something I would never do on my truck.

Also, if you're talking about doing it on your 2012, it is a rather involved process from what I've been told. I was asking Matt from Moe's some questions about mine. He said for '12s the entire front axle has to be swapped with an 09-11 axle because the differential is different on the '12s. There's also modifications that have to be made to the rear differential. It was about $900 for gears and install kits. Plus the cost of an 09-11 front axle and labor on top of that. Plus the cost of whatever modifications have to be made to the rear differential.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it...just giving you what I've found out about mine. I have factory 3.92s in mine, so I don't see it ever being worth all that hassle.

This is bang on
As I went through this last August.
$2K is on the low side. It will more likely closer to $3K

But in the end it is well worth it.

Damn that sucks and ya I'm going to do the rt 4.10s in both front and rear. I'm considering the mopar lift as well. If I do that dodge said they will keep my extended bumper to bumper warranty intact and if anything breaks due to lift or strain they will replace it.

I thought RTs only came in 2wd so you would only have OEM 4.10s for the rear? And they're going to honor your warranty when you change out your whole front axle to an earlier year model and install aftermarket gears? That sounds a little sketchy to me. I would make sure they fully understand what you're doing before I bank on the factory warranty still being honored.

Dodge said as long as I use mopar parts and have mopar mechanics do the work they will keep the warranty intact.

I'm sure you will anyway, but keep us updated. I'd like to know what it ends up costing and how it goes.

The only problem is that Dodge has never put out factory 4.10's in the front. So even though you will have Mopar rear gears, you are going to be forced to run aftermarket 4.10's in the front. You are going to spend a ton of money on all Mopar parts, so make sure they are very clear about this before you drop that kind of coin.
