So, my truck has come down to its last bit of chrome left, the tips on the exhaust. Like the rest of the truck, I would like those to be black, my plan is to remove the bumper, tape off the truck to keep away stray paint, and spray paint them with high heat-resistant automotive paint.

My question is, I know I need to clean them first, but what is the best way to prep them for paint? Do I need to sand them, primer, and then paint?

I'd scuff up the surface so the paint will have something to hold on to, then use primer or adhesion promoter, then shoot it with the black

If you can, look for a "ultra" high heat paint. I would just clean the tips tape off the truck and use a green scotch bright pad to scuff the tips, and spray them black. Remember, if you use a primer it has to be ultra high heat as well.

Duplicolor makes an engine enamel that's good up to 500 degrees and VHT has a header paint that's good up to 2000

What sullivan said. If you use a regular primer or adhesion promoter under high heat paint, it's still going to flake off. I used the 2000 degree (which is definitely overkill) satin black VHT on mine. Just clean them with mineral spirits or some kind of degreaser, scuff, clean again, paint.

Awesome, thanks for all the advice everyone. As soon as it decides to stop being so windy/rainy here I'll be getting this done.

Did just that and it came out great (well, for having no painting experience). A lot simpler than I imagined it'd be.

Lots of tape (newspaper kept ripping)

I like the look of no exhaust tips visible also, but this came with the truck and sounds good. So, I'll keep it for a while. Other more important mods to pay for since I like the sound now.

Looks nice did you debadge the Ram heads too? I think it would be sweeter if Ram heads were black too.

The front ram head was painted to match when the grille was. So now the back one is off having the same thing done. Should have it back on tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!

Looks good. What paint did you use? It looks glossy.

That's what I was going to ask Mitch. Mine are the satin black...I like the look of gloss, but I think it would be hard to keep clean. Maybe I'll repaint them.

I ended up going with the semi gloss black. Not any harder to keep clean than the actual truck, so I'm okay with it. As long as everything is dirty together. Lol.

Haha. Thanks. Can't wait for the badge to get done so I can clean her up now and see what they look like then.
