It’s a good truck now but it’s gonna have to be great to keep up with the up and comming Ford 7.0 gas engine paired to a 10speed

I would not want to sell my truck just for a new one, but id see how mich i could get for my used 66RFE and see what the cost is for a 9speed swap.

I have to big a bond with my truck to give it up.

I am thinking of a 4.56 swap once i get some $$ and can find a shop in my area
Anyone know a good shop near north Oklahoma??
Kind of torn on the 4.56 vs 4.88?
I am leveled on 35's and will never change it
I know there isn't much difference in the 2
But does anyone have lots of miles on these gears with this set up yet
Are you still glad you did the swap
How is the day to day and highway driving
I think it would be worth every penny getting that big hemi where it wants to be
I just don't want to be screaming down the highway every day
But not having to drop 2 gears to pass someone would be nice
Can anyone share their experience with these so far

My driving is 95% highway at roughly 70mph
I tow a trailer full of toys a few times a year rarely over 10
My truck is a 17 2500 CCLB leveled on 35's
3.73 ratio
Thanks

Just go 4.88s. On 35s you will never regret it or wonder if you should have gone with more gear.

With the 4.88 is your truck screaming in the 70-80mph range
I think for the city driving i do 88's would surely up the fun factor
But almost all of my driving is highway
Thank you for replying
I've read all posts i could find on this forum and it's an expensive upgrade
I am hoping to keep my truck for a long time
I just don't want to get to much gear and have the engine screaming like crazy going down the highway
And i have no plans on bigger than 35 tire
Thanks again

No.

Its perfect RPM range for a hemi. Actually at 70 i wish i had a little more RPM.

35’s in 6th @70 is like 2000 or a hair more. 80 mph its a hair under 2500rpm.

I wish i went 5.13’s

The hemi is happy running at 2300-2500 all day for a cruising rpm. I like it closer to 2500

This with the 4.88 ?
Excellent info thank you
Exactly what i was hoping to get
I have read several threads including the most recent all 300 posts lol
And seem to get lost in them on what everyone set up is
Sounds like i might try to find some 4.88
Curious what gears did you use?
Thanks again

Yes 4.88’s

I used nitro gears. Great people to talk to good customer service and a respectable warranty. They can set you up with the closest installer.

Thats what i did.

The first person I talk to on the phone could answer all my technical questions. It was nice not getting the runaround and transferred from one person to another.

Nitro gears caters to jeep and Toyota. They are starting to branch out to the big trucks but they have had a great reputation in the Toyota and jeep community.

Thank you very much
I don't have the funds yet but I'm getting close
I appreciate the input
I think this will make my truck much more drivable so I'm hoping in the next couple months

What was total cost and did you do diff covers too? Iced debated diff covers but after watching Gail Banks’s YouTube series on diff covers, I’m hesitant

The biggest added benefit to diff covers from when I was looking to do this on my 2500 was the damn drain plug lol.

I have the mag hytec covers on the front and rear diffs. And I agree easy to change with the drain plug and the magnets that catch the metal shavings are the main reasons I installed them.

Oh, mine are already bought. That $$$ flying out was in the past. Now just trying to figure out if I like TN or VA better. I'm thinkin' TN. I do not belong here.

Not 1st, 2nd or 3rd? No Trophy!
Update:
Here we are, January again, one yr later and I am now living in Tennessee! Woohoo. A free state. Now, $$$ gonna start flying out of my wallet again. Gotta have threaded barrels if I'm gonna suppress my ARs. And the cans themselves + $200. Tax stamp each.
It never ends! Aaagghhhhh!

I see no benefits to a drain plug. The cover should come off every time anyway to inspect the gears.

That is JMO^^^

This is a fact \/\/\/

And the shape of the OEM diff cover is like that for a reason. That half moon shape you see on the OEM cover. Its there so the ring gear can shoot gear oil right up it and that shape directs the oil up and over the ring gear and forward to the pinion gear to lube it.....it also ads in sending oil to the channels that direct oil to the the bearings.

No aftermarket diff cover mimics that shape.

My OEM cover is staying on.

Watch banks videos on the covers. I honestly dont like the man much but what he explains makes complete sense

I get what ur saying. I definitely didn’t research it that much. A lot of that makes sense. However- my statement rings even more true then lol .. best thing is 1 Bolt to drain it vrs removing how many are on the cover to drain and inspect. So while that may be the Only benefit lol.. it’s deffinetly a Benny! Lol, but in this case the cons would out way the pros and after watching that I wouldn’t waste the money on a diff cover as I would never stress a diff enough to warrant better cooling from cooling fins or more capacity. As long as the gears are good quality and the fluid is changed on a “as needed basis” it should out last the truck.

I guess my point is, if you’re going to take the effort to inspect your gears there’s no point in having a drain plug just un-bolt the cover and let the fluid drain into your pan.

All the more reason to either keep the factory cover or maybe go with the G2 Axle Cover that is very similarly shaped.

+1 What U&A said. Revs are perfect.

I've worked all the numbers for all the gear ratios in the trans. When I get the other half of the $$, I will be putting 5.13s in Big White. ('17 CC LB 6.4 4X4). Likely will go to 37s which will drop RPMs even more. These motors like to run 2100-2400 rpm. It's the sweet spot.

One bonus, it will keep me from proving the speed governor limits us to 104 mph. (It does....every friggin' time). Exactly 104 mph. ;)
