I had to take a loan out to pay for motor swap myself total $11,775. New motor will be covered for 3yr /100k miles. I’ll just keep fighting for some help from FCA and the selling dealer. If I wasn’t so upside down on the truck I’d just trade it and look for something American

Hopefully with legal assistance you can recoup that 11,775 plus additional money for your inconvenience.

Of course there going to put the U.S. cluster in it. Ram owners upgrade to the Laramie/ Rebel and nicer trim package cluster on our own, of course it was swapped for the us market at the dealership.

Out here in Spokane, WA, there are a lot of Canadian used cars. The dealers can come out on top apparently, I could only guess after exchange rates, import taxes, registration there is still enough money in the game.

You would think every dealer would at least offer a warranty based on the manufacture warranty, or whatever would be remaining at no cost.

So on my way to work yesterday in my 2016 ram 1500 rd. I got off the highway exit , come to a stop and motor begins making an awful noise . I turn left and noise is just bang bang banging away . Pull over shut the truck off wait a few seconds and turn it back on and the banging in even worse. Have triple AAA tow it to the dealer and they discover the motor is blown. They run my vin number and sorry it’s not covered because you have no warrantee because truck was originally sold in Canada! Quote for new motor $11k !!! I’m so screwed!

My 2014 eco blew up at 26k miles. Fortunately I have an extended warranty. So far so good on the 2016 motor but that’s it for me and the eco.

As stated, the country of origin thing has been around for a while. What sucks is the Ecodiesels have a deserved reputation as a grenade engine(rotating mass failure), and FCA should step up to the plate instead of telling owners to jam it.
So where did you hear these were 'grenade engines' ???????? Have read nothing that reflects that situation with these VM motors. In fact world wide they are rated in the top two engines for reliability, so ?? Think someone has been feeding you false information. Also the Canada origin warantee thing has been around forever, down here, Texas, the sales outlet is required by law tgo inform you if the vehicle is an imported vehicle, do not know where this guy is from but would think he would have checked. Also you CAN get a warantee for one if you engage with FCA on an imported vehicle, or if you chose you can get an after market policy, your choice. Am sorry to hear this, wonder what caused it to happen??

Yeah, that rule's been on the books forever. Regardless, that engine should last a long time.

Either they aren't required to tell this, or many of them just don't anyway (shocking!). Chrysler stopped honoring warranties in the U.S. for Canadian cars back around 2003, if you google "2003 Chrysler Canada warranties" or something like that, you will find the news articles about it from back then. I guess everyone is just supposed to remember or know that somehow.

I agree that FCA should honor it, but I'm sure there have been thousands of cases like this since 2003 and probably not many of them favor the consumer.

Wow! Shady Dealers and FCA screwing the consumer for it...found the article how FCA won't honor Canadian Warranty when sold in the USA...

Did you get the eco buyout? That comes with a warranty. Mine is in the shop for a cat converter problem and I have a Longhorn loaner. If it wasn’t for the 15 mpg vs 24. Mpg I might go back to gas.

I am on multiple forums, and there have been many, many, many reports from actual owners of grenaded ecodiesels. No false information. When the change in oil spec came about, there was an internal memo leaked that showed internal alarm at FCA over "rotating mass failures", i.e. bottom end catastrophic failures. This is aside from the cam drive related failures. Remember the ecodiesel began as a stillborn GM project...

As said already, sorry to hear this. Too late for this post but I was going to suggest having the truck towed and parked somewhere of high visibility with permission. Hang a large sign on the truck with the name of the dealership on the sign. Then put lemons all over the truck. I’ve never done this but got the idea from my 91 year old dad years ago.

The Ecodiesel settlement for emissions was not offered for Canadian vehicles. There is a separate class action lawsuit in progress in Canada for that.

Don't know if anyone else said this already and sorry if i am repeating but i have a 2018 1500
ED and there is an open recall 1VB that is for the coolant leaking into the block and mixing with fuel and oil and killing the engine. There is no parts available to fix until April so i would get the engine checked to make sure it wasn't do to that.

I live in MA and was looking for a Big Horn with a very specific combo of color and options. There was one I found and I should have jumped all over it, but it was actually the first truck I looked at and I thought I could win a game of chicken with the dealer. I lost. He sold the truck to someone else. My mistake. That's another story.

Anyway, I widened my search and found the truck I wanted in Ohio. The color/options were exactly what I wanted and the price was about $2,000 less than anything I could find locally. I called the dealer and had multiple conversations with him and was comfortable that this was the truck I wanted to buy. I had the a copy of the original window sticker so I knew it was a "Canadian" truck. What I didn't know was the warranty exclusion. So I flew to Detroit, and the dealer sent a car to pick me up and bring me the 75 miles to the dealership. After test driving the truck, and then having it inspected by a local shop, I agreed to buy the truck.

It was at this point that the salesman told me this was a US built truck for the Canadian market (which I already knew), and therefore there would be no factory warranty on the truck (which I didn't know). I was a bit taken back, and frankly didn't believe him. I ended up calling FCA myself and they confirmed that the salesman was correct. Part of the salesman's response to me was, "We're 2 grand under anything you could find locally...you're getting a great deal. If you're worried about warranty, use the money you saved to buy an aftermarket warranty." (which he would have been more than happy to sell to me - I didn't buy one). Although I was disappointed that I wasn't getting the factory warranty, he wasn't wrong.

Before I signed on the dotted line, I had a long conversation with the salesman about this and he was actually very honest and informative (as far as I know). He explained to me that due to the strong US dollar against the Canadian dollar, it was very lucrative for US dealerships to buy cars and trucks from Canada and resell them here in the US. He said that the trucks all come from Canada with dashboards set up in kph, and they have companies that swap the faceplates to mph for all of the vehicles they import. He said it costs about $300 per truck. I don't know if switching the dash is a requirement or not to sell in the US market. I think it is, but I am not sure. When I was looking at trucks in MA, I drove one that had a kph speedo, and the dealer told me that it was from Canada and would be swapped out before I took delivery. NOTE: He never mentioned the warranty exclusion. I assume that never happens until you are about to sign the contract, then they hit you with that at the last minute. Clever dealers...

You would think every dealer would at least offer a warranty based on the manufacture warranty, or whatever would be remaining at no cost.

"...at no cost"??? Why would you think that? Dealers are in the business of making money, and we all know that rarely are they going to do anything that benefits the consumer...especially on that large of a scale. They might make a concession on a deal with an expert negotiator, but even that is rare. Dealerships that make money do so for a reason, and that reason is NOT because they spend money they don't have to spend.

Oh and hope you have better luck with FCA then i did. I had 4 open claims for an emissions problem and could never get past the first line of their defense on customer service(or lack of). I am now in lemon law against them. Would definitely check with a lemon law lawyer they are usually free. Had many gas engine Rams and they were awesome. I went for the gas mileage and longevity and is junk. I wish you well. Don't quit that what these corporations are hoping for.

Had my own shop for 25 yrs and used a lot of Jasper rebuilt engines and transmissions. They were just the best ! Believe me, I saw some real bad rebuilts over the years. Jasper runs all units behind a large electric motor to test all pressures & look for leaks.
It meant A LOT to me to NOT have someone kicking my door down over a problem !!
I like all Ram drive trains so yes, I want the very best parts in them.
I vote for a fresh reman with a real warranty in that nice Ram truck.
Wishing you the best.

I just wonder if you couldn't have the truck hauled to a Canadian dealer where it would be under warranty?

I think it can be changed back & forth in the settings using the buttons on the steering wheel.
I have not read everything, you can change the read out, but the numbers on the dial are in KM,so it would have to be changed. liters, not gallons, etc.
The Canadian dollar is about 0.76 us, so you dollars buys way more
But this no warranty crap is B.S. Your Dealer is a crook. Any one that takes a salesman word on this is too trusting. I knew a few , at dealers, and are up front, but small used dealer, No way in hell.
This problem also a problem in Canada, People buying a car down there, up here no warranty.
BUT . the dealers should have to be up front about this.
would think that these are leased trucks returned and than sold are dealers auctions

BTW , the truck is sold in Ca, but guess where it is built???????
Another point, off topic, when I type on this site, I have to type real slow, or lots of letters are missed, is this just me or anyone else? I am using a laptop.
