The only koons I see is in West Virginia or Virginia
Yeah, they aren't next door but surely that's close enough to WNY to hop a 1 way flight or have a spouse/buddy drive you to save several thousand dollars, no? I tried to buy from Mark Dodge in Louisiana, but the truck sold while we were negotiating. I then went to order from Granger in Iowa, but Power Wagon can't be ordered at the moment. Both would have been a $100-$150 flight then drive home or have it delivered sort of event, but 5% under invoice is worth it. I ended up driving about 3 hours each way to buy my 75th anniversary PW. I don't know what your time is worth, but even a 14 hour day on the road for several grand is worth it to me. Plus I'll get to see something cool along the way, inevitably, because I always find something to entertain myself on road trips.
Most dealers suck and if you limit yourself to your immediate surroundings, unless you live by Mark Dodge, you're unlikely to get the best deal. Remember, he who cares least wins when it comes to negotiations. I gave my local dealers a chance to meet or beat the price I got out of town, none would come close.
When I bought my 75th PW I told them what I would pay before I drove there, assuming good condition. They gave me their price again, I said no. They asked to meet in the middle, I said no. They asked if my offer was my only offer and I said it was, and that somebody could come in there the next hour and give them exactly what they were asking, but I wasn't moving. If I didn't get my price, I'd just wait and order the 2023. I literally didn't care, I had not developed an emotional investment.
New cars, I don't even bother to negotiate in person. I buy cars like a fleet does. I send out bid requests. Granger, Koons, Gupton, etc. make it real easy now. They tell you up front what it'll be.
