I didn't know you could get a hemi with the 8 3/4 rear, I thought that they all came with a dana.
Good thing the 3.23 gears had an automatic in front of them. I snapped ring gear teeth off of a set of 3.23's with my 4 speed Cuda.

I think you needed 3.54's and deeper to get the Dana,as they never offered a Dana with 3.23's

440 & Hemi stick shifts got the Dana, they weren't confident the 8¾ could take the driveline shock of manual (meaning power) shifting long term. The 727 didn't shock the driveline as much (and absorbed a good portion of it itself) so they could get away with it in the automatic cars.

The car didn't make enough torque to hurt the 8 3/4,it wasn't really a power house out of the hole,as my dads old 428 Galaxi would eat the Hemi to 125 mph,but after that the Hemi would start to come alive. They used to race the 2 cars fairly often, and my dad was crafty enough to always hit the brakes at about 120 mph,and then tell his younger brother the race was over, lol. My Aunt put the majority of the 36,000 miles on it,as it was her daily driver, even in winter. My uncle did kick his ass for selling it ,especially once the cars started to bring big money at the auctions in the early 2,000's

In the late 60's/early 70's the Western Canada dealers had a fair bit of pull with the factory,as they were getting cars that even Mr Norms couldn't get.

440 six pack was a much better street engine. Yeah, the hemi heads would eat it's lunch about 120+ but not usually through a ¼ mile or light to light; the big wedge just had more low end grunt. If I could find a matched pair of 440 marine engines I'd replace the 350's in my boat lol.

Buddy had one of those but it was a frankenstien Charger.
Nose was painted, flip up headlights, hood had the scoop, doors had the side cutouts, trunk lid had a spoiler.

Black with large gold metallic flake.
16yr old gearhead wanna-be;s that kept trying out different stuff to gain more speed.
Man did we spend a lot of time in the garage.

Thanks for the memory recall.

3.23's and the hemi wasn't a very good combo together. I would think a 3.92 383 roadrunner or Cuda would have been a close race to it stock in a quarter lol.

My Uncle traded a 68 383/4sp Road Runner off on the Hemi, and according to him,the 383 was quite a bit quicker to 100 mph .There were alot of cars that would kick a stock hemi's ass light to light on the street, especially the 3.23 geared ones, lol

You gotta close 1 eye if you see a Challenger, lol
I would have to close both eyes to make that thing look like a Challenger. I'm nigh on 70 years old/young, been a Mopar guy all my life. I can be fooled some, but not very often when it comes to Mopars.

I had a 69 Roadrunner that came with the 383, but I got a deal on a blueprinted hemi and swapped it in. 727 rebuilt with hemi guts and the 8 3/4 rear end was fine. Dynoed @ 640 hp and it would pull the front wheels with the 489 gears in it. 4k torque converter. I did use Summers Bros axels. 10.5x31 wrinkle wall slicks. I had 3 pumpkins, 354,391,and 489.

The Hemi when modded was the king, but in stock form a 440 was a better engine for the street and as a daily driver. What did the car run for you?

Yeah, the Hemi's are/were beasts, but the 426 variety needed a big gear to show itself. High gears and Hemi's don't mix well off the line, but once they get into their torque range, nothing else compares with them. That's why NHRA set the rpm cap for Pro Stock at, I think 10,500. Chevy's worked great in that range but the Hemi was just getting started.
