I have a 2000 model with a 5.9 engine. When I try to start it, it does nothing but clicks. I have change the neutral switch, I have checked the fuse block at the relay but still nothing. Could this be the starter? Or is there something else I can check before shelling out all that money for a new one? Also the starter is a fairly new reman. Not sure how old I have only had the truck about a year. By the way I am a new Dodge ram owner.

I saw elsewhere on here where people could get theirs to start in neutral due to issues with the shifter not aligning properly. I tried to start it in neutral but nothing happened. Still just a click. I have not tried to give it a forceful nudge into park like some I have seen on here have had to do. I will try that later. I have recently had issues with it being slow to go into park while I had it in 4wheel mode. Could something be wrong with 4wheel mode that makes it not start. It was running and in 2 wheel when I parked it.

By the way. I have had the starter off and had it tested. Supposedly it is good.

Battery? When the neutral safety switch goes bad you won't get anything when you turn the key, not even a click. I suspect it may be a bad battery if you hear it clicking repeatedly as you try to crank it. Maybe try to jump start it and see.

That was the first thing I tried. Put the battery in my 78 ranchero. Started it right. Also put my 200 amp charger starter on it. Nothing but a click.

First thing that I would look at is the wiring going to the starter, check for loose or corroded connections, had something similar and just removed the wiring, cleaned it up and reinstalled, started fine. If that does not work, remove the starter, but leave the wiring connected and make sure starter actually spins over. if that works, then get a 1/2 breaker bar and socket and try to spin the motor over manually to make sure it is not locked up.

I haven't been able to take the starter off, rain. But the other day when I had the chance I tried to start it and afterward I tried turning the engine by hand. When I did I was able to turn the engine and the starter clicked as the Bendix kicked back into the starter. That is one reason I am wondering if it is not the starter. I should have mentioned this is the second time it has done this. First time I thought it was the wiring causing it. But now I am totally at loss.

I want to thank the members who tried to help. It was my starter. I hit it a few times with a hammer and the engine kicked right over. I saw where this works sometimes on the net. Thought I would try it before taking it off. Looks like I might have too anyway.
