I've never understood why people do that in pictures. The plate rides around on the vehicle everyday out in plain view. What is the big secret?

It's a fallacy brought on by movies and tv blurring out plates. For them it's a cheap 'insurance' policy against a suit for disseminating personal information. People came to believe it protects them against identity theft or a personal grudge. The DPPA of '94 makes us reasonably safe against ne'er-do-wells. Blurring out your plate is like spraying shark repellent on yourself when you swim in the ocean. Does it do any good? Unlikely, but if it makes you feel better....

The usual reasoning is that while yes, it's visible all the time on the road, there is no link between the plate # and the driver/owner/truck contents. The people seeing the plate on the road do not know who you are or what you have in the truck. In an environment such as this forum, there is a connection. People can see the connection between that plate # and say, the fact that you've installed an expensive aftermarket component in the truck. Or that your tailgate lock isn't working right or maybe that you set up that nifty underseat storage for your hunting rifles. While we like to think we're all "good guys" here, this is the real world and there are always going to be those who are not. It's a simple bit of security.

Not sure about the U.S but here unless you hire a PI or know someone in DMV you can’t look up plates. And if someone’s does at DMV it keep a record of searches. If someone wants to come to my house and unbolt my bull bar or steal my side steps they’re more than welcomed to do so. Or at least try [emoji12]

Instead of fussing out my license plate in my YouTube videos, I use an old license plate from when I lived in California [emoji23][emoji106]
the bad thing is remembering to take it off!

I do something similar, I have a phony vanity plate that I just slap overtop of mine with a piece of gaffers tape on the back. I haven't left it on yet, but I did come close once (got to the end of the driveway before remembering).

Legally it's the same here, but since we're talking about illegal activities... :\ And honestly, I worry less about theft than about the wack-jobs out there who go homicidal over perceived online insults.

But, this is sidetracking the purpose of this thread and has all been covered in many other threads, so I'm going to go out and see about giving my truck a wash since we've got our first sunny day in about three weeks and then maybe install a new under $100 mod. :)

Under $100 by a dime with the shipping.
Touched up a small dent on top of tailgate and installed the Geno's tailgate protector.
Shouldn't catch so much rain water when parked in the driveway also.

I didn't know that was a thing but it looks better than the OEM piece.

I've considered getting one of those. I'd be interested in hearing how it affects the airflow over the tonneau cover after you've done some highway driving with it in place.

Posted this before but I good place IMO for the GPS and cheap to make, I think it was $7.00 or $8.oo for the GPS arm and about $4.00 for the plastic base.

That’s exactly what I need, I’m getting tired of repairs on paint because of the canopy door rubbing it off [emoji2359]
