I have a 2001 5.9 cummins that wont engage 4wd. I changed the vacuum pump and still nothing. I have a 4wd light come on my dash in 2wd but in 4wd high and low no light. Transfercase produced lo range to my rear wheels while in "4wd lo" but not to the front wheels. Could it be my transfercase all messed up or would a cable CAD work?

It would cause the light to come on in 2wd but not 4wd?

When you engage the lever into a 4wd range. A vacuum switch is activated, sending source vacuum through metal lines and hoses to your actuator.
The vacuum ends up in a canister which pulls the shift fork holding the engagement collar that joins your stub axles togenther. This movement also closes a switch for the dash light.

I'd start with checking all the steel and rubber vacuum lines, and then the transfer case switch to make sure it allows vacuum through when in 4wd. Steel lines rust and vacuum lines crack.
Once you're certain you have good vacuum at the correct times but still no 4x4 you can check the axle canister and the shifting mechanism.

Or you can junk all that and get or make a posi lock cable system. The initial install is a pain but certainly worth the effort.

Thanks I'll check that. Would a bypass cable actuator work?

For vacuum lines I saw a guy, with engine off, just pull the vacuum hose from the axle and blow with mouth. He was lucky and heard where the leak was.

Check the metal vacuum line that runs right beside the cat, it tends to rub a hole there.
