cliff note: need new catalytic converters. ive one seen one for 09 ram. is it possible to just use a universal cat that fits?

so basically i bought the truck off another guy and he had a whole exhaust system built for my 2009 dodge ram 1500

aside from the other issues with the exhaust system, one big thing that bothers me is that he cut out the cats and welded in straight pipes. i know its not a hige deal, but i want the mil light off, and i dont like the smell of exhaust every time i get out of my truck (the straight pipes arent welded in very well)

im saving up for the ARH long tube headers kit with cats, but its gonna be awhile for that. so for now i just wanna get the cats back in properly. after searching auto sites, ive only seen one universal catalytic ocnverter that will "fit" my truck. its a high flow magnaflow and costs 150.

do i have any other options? could i just find a universal cat and weld them in, given the diameters are the same?

Yeah your best bet is to get some magnaflow universal fit cats and weld them in the stock location before the 2nd set of 02 sensors. They are working great on my truck with ARH longtube kit.

If those doesn't take care of the CEL then you can buy some sparkplug non-foulers from your local Advanced Auto and stack them to pull the sensors out of the direct flow of exhaust. You'll have to drill out the upper one so the sensor will slide past the end and thread it in. I did this previously with the stock exhaust manifolds and no cats and it worked like a charm.

Maybe before buying and installing cats you try to fix the bad welds and try the non-foulers. Although it won't take care of the catless smell from the tailpipe.

believe when i say, the bad welds are beyond saving. im a welder and still dont even wanna mess it up. all boogered up

so basically i can just buy any universal cat? i only ask that because this is the only cat ive found for my truck:
PartsTrain.com - Hard to Find Auto Parts and Truck Parts -

it says its unviversal, but its the only one ive seen whenever i look for ram cats.

When the cat clogged up on my pontiac I figured out what inlet and outlet size I needed along with how long the body was of the stock plugged one. Did a lot of searching and found a magnaflow with the same measurements and welded it in place. Haven't had any problems with the universal magnaflow one in 9+ years. It was under $100. Ebay sells universal converters for under $100. Weld it in yourself or find someone to weld it for you.

For those looking for a catalytic converter replacement. I ordered these on ebay and put them on. they had to be worked a little to fit properly, but they work great, especially for the money!

Try to find someone that has replaced their stock exhaust(including the header pipe, including the cats)with headers. They might have the stock pieces just laying around the garage-----like I do.

You better not get caught with a catalytic converter, that you don't have the vehicle that it fits.

If you have a catalytic converter & you don't own the vehicle that it belongs to, you must have the vehicle owners information

They have finally taken the first step

Now they need a judge to write search warrants to inspect buildings & property

They need to find precious metals buyers that cut up the catalytic converters

Hang onto them. The EPA is cracking down on violators of the Clean Air Act. Even if your state doesn't test for emissions running without cats is illegal at the federal level. They haven't gone after many individual violators yet, mostly targeting businesses right now, but I'm afraid it is only a matter of time before they start coming after John Q Public.

Again, thank you for your concern.
I have catalytic converters and they pass my state’s annual inspection.
