I need a recommendation on an electric welder for small, minor, non-structural projects.

Immediately I have a need to weld a bolt onto a wheel-lock lug nut for nut removal. Other uses might include making (non-structural and non-critical) brackets to mount electronics or lightweight hand tool fixes/fabrications. The setting is non a commercial one, instead it's for do-it-yourself mini-projects and fixes, less than 1/4-inch steel thicknesses.

Would a flux-cored wire feed welder meet these needs?

Needs to be 120 volts or less.

Thanks -

Mike

I picked up one of these 3 years ago and haven't had any problems with it. I dont use it that often but it sure comes in handy when needed.

My little Lincoln 140 is going on a dozen years old now,and has seen a fair bit of use. It's still a good little welder when you use gas. If you're just a hobbyist welder ,you can also pick up one of these little cutting torch kits, you don't need a contract to fill the bottles,is it's best selling feature.

I got my 140 new for $449. Around me farm and fleet has it on sale a lot.

$255! Holy! I paid $38 to refill my little tank but that was last spring. Not looking forward to when it runs out.

Canada pricing, lol. Last time i filled my pair of bottles for my little mig was before Covid, and the little bottles then set me back $55.00 each Canadian.I'm scared to see what they'll cost me on the next fill though

I have a 20 year old Miller 120v flux or gas mig that has served me well. I have built a lot of stuff with it in the last two decades.

I‘m not so sure <1/4” and locking lug nuts are the same use case. Would it make a solid enough weld on the nut? Maybe.

A nut extractor would make short work of that for a lot less money.

I sold my Mig Welder, Miller Arc Welder, two sets of bottles, 1 large set & a set that was about 1/2 sized.
Sold them about 3 years ago, i had just had the bottles certified
Sold it all to a Fireman that lost his house in a fire, he was living in his combo garage/ work shop

Do you have access to a Harbor Freight? The Titanium flux has pretty good reviews, or Tractor Supply has a little Hobart that has good reviews also. Both are fluxcore though and really can't be upgraded to gas mig.

A flux core wire can be used on any wire feed as long as you have the right ripe size to allow for the bigger wire diameter. Flux core welds are supposed to be stronger than a standard wire feed.

We need more pictures of the trailer. That's impressive for a little 110 volt mig
Stick. Used 3/32 7018 and never tripped duty cycle or the 15A garage outlet breaker. I don't use a welder at home too often so I didn't see the need to spend a fortune on something fancy.

Here's a thread hijack photo dump!

The trailer weighs about 1300lbs with 160lbs tongue weight. It rides on a brakeless 3500lb axle, 1250lb springs, and 145R12 load C tires with an 80mph speed rating. The steel is part recycled tent trailer frame and 3/16x2" angle. The springs are mounted to two 1x2"s welded together to 2" square runners. It's fully insulated on 6 sides. The bed is a 60-80 queen.
