Wife and I went to a concert on Wednesday night - drove down to Atlanta to see our friends in SAUL play at the Masquerade, and also got to hang with the guys from Kingdom Collapse. Great guys - signed all our merch, etc. - Anyway, after the show, we went to get something to eat. Parked the truck right across the street from the pub where we were getting some food to go - took about 30 minutes to get it.

Came out and the rear passenger door window was broken out. Whoever it was, didn't seem to know what they were doing.... Only thing they stole was a medical kit with a bunch of gauze and bandages... and they drank a can of Cherry Coke from the cooler. They rooted through the rest of the cab, but didn't mess with my wife's purse, dumped out my Halls cough drops, rooted through the glove boxes, left all our signed merch and even a canvas from the tour alone. Didn't touch my ammo, my magazines, my radios, or my personal locator strobe. Left the other med kit with the bleeding and airway management stuff alone. SMDH...

Cops think they know who it was and apparently were able to verify there is video... Not that worried about it...

Honestly - I'm more amused than pissed off - insurance is covering the replacement of the window completely, and put $100 in my account for the medical kit...

if I had to guess I would say it was a bored kid that popped the window, any slizzy thief would have at least dumped the purse looking for cash.

Kids would have taken the ammo and rummaged the purse.

I'd lay solid money on mentally ill/burnt out repeat offender, probably in the 'unhoused community', which is both on brand for the apparent illogic of what was taken and the vehicle was treated as well as how the local cops have a suspect immediately.

Likely had some help from an unnamed substance that rhymes with mef.

That sucks. Last night around midnight saw a bright light shining on the back of the neighbors house so got up and looked out. Police driving through the ally with the alley lights on. I went out on the deck but didn't see or hear anything. Then at 12:37AM police went past my house again. Got that one on the security camera. Likely kids rummaging through unlocked cars around here. Mine stay either in the garage or locked and we have security cameras all around the house.

We had some theives go through a nearby town, and hit our area one night a few yrs ago. Stole a whole ashtray of change from my car (used for parking downtown for work). They passed up other items in the car. Cops said they hit a lot of people that night. Yeah, it sux.

In the late 90's I had a CB stolen from a car. It was a pretty plain CB I got at a swap meet cheap, nothing special, probably a value of $15?? lol. Oddly they didn't touch the box of CD's had in the back and a couple other things I remember had a way more value than the CB. That was a hard one to figure out. Even at that time CBs didn't have much value.

Well, get the window fix. You were in kind of a high-risk zone that night. Concerts and night events. Cars get backed into and hit by people with junk in their veins. My advice is to not let one unfortunate action make you feel all of mankind is after your stuff. Probably you'll never have another problem (fingers crossed). Some people go nuts on security after a situation like this and get real paranoid.

I have a neighbor who used to tell everyone for yrs about the gun under his truck seat. It's like that cowboy movie where the town drunk goes around showing everyone the gold nugget he found. Well, one night the gun got liberated. Now he's got his house cam'd-out and lit up like a max security prison. Despite the fact that in over 20x yrs there's never been a single serious incident. It's a safe area. His kid said they thought it was a person they knew.. so probably not a random event. Heck...maybe he just forgot he removed it from his truck..and it fell between boxes in the garage!

@Jeepwalker: I believe in "security through obscurity" to as much of an extent as possible. I don't advertise what I have, what I own, or what I carry. I have installed hidden features in my truck to both prevent it from being stolen, and to discourage theft of items in it. This was a one-off in my opinion and I grew up in Atlanta - so I'm pretty familiar with how things work down there - hell, I even worked that section of town for a couple of years patrolling - and the venue is one where I patrolled regularly as well. Normally, being parked where I was, would discourage this kind of behavior - cameras everywhere (and cops reported that they've got the thief on camera), witnesses, parked across from the pub where large windows provided a view for guests to see... But, it is what it is - as I said, I'm more amused than angry.

@BuschLatte420: Yeah - I'm still finding glass in crevices that I missed... :/

That's a healthy attitude. ...Even though it does anger a guy when someone steals his stuff and causes damage he has to pay for (that's even WORSE). For me, it took a while for the sting to go away. Maybe its the thought of some creep pilfering through my stuff, IDK. Or senselessly damaging other people's property like in your case.

I admire your attitude.

A former colleague residing near SW border, has had a to deal with thieves who cross border and scout neighborhoods for open garage doors or unattended lawn equipment. What ever they deem of value gets thrown in their van and they return to Mexico. My friend says that most in his neighborhood garage their cars, locking the garage door as well as their vehicle(s) inside the garage. If my friend stops cutting his grass for lunch, he temporarily locks the lawnmower in his garage rather than leaving it unattended.

Regrettably, smash and grab crimes, car jacking, and shop lifting by organized groups (rather than the random incidents by those who should be institutionalized), will increase exponentially throughout the US, no longer just a border area phenomenon. During these emerging trends, (unfortunately now a reality in LA) we’ll see spikes in our insurance rates and experience a loss of the priceless “sense of security” that we tend to have taken for granted.

When I was younger and poorer I lived in a bad neighborhood. Car was broken into monthly if not bi-weekly. I just left the doors unlocked to prevent yet another insurance claim. Too bad they still broke the window or went in through the sunroof most of the time, but that was easier to fix then them prying the door lock and damaging the door in the process so it spent 2 or 3 days in the body shop. I still empty my truck completely and leave the tonneau open whenever I head into the city to reduce the temptation. I remember going into Vancouver for a computer part I couldn't find anywhere else. When I got there they said it was out front somebody must have shoplifted it. Then walked back to my truck to find the ignition pulled and a guy running away as I approached. These "victims" do thousands of dollars in damage that could be better spent housing them behind bars.

You know what's really strange? When I worked for a major mechanical contractor for many years, many of our mechanics, fabricators, and pipe fitters never locked their vans. And we/they worked in some bad areas...and in busy downtown areas. Parked outside, or in the back of buildings. The vans were full of expensive tools, copper fittings, welders, Milwaukee cordless tools, torch kits, a laptop, cylinders of freon (those aren't cheap!), etc.

Many of our journeymen had 20+ years in the biz and none of the guys I knew well ever had anything stolen. We'd go to a touch-n-go area and I'd ask if they had their vans locked and they'd just shrug their shoulders or ask why. I guess people don't screw with mechanical contractor vans. Around here anyway. And by "around here" I mean the whole south part of the state and N Illinois. I just thought that was remarkable.
