ECM Interchangeable between years?

Hey y'all,

I've got a 2015 Ram Power Wagon. I'm looking to get a tune done to it, and as we all know at this point, it needs to either be unlocked, or I need to get a spare to unlock.

I am able to purchase a 2016/17 ecm for far less than a 2015, so I was wondering if the VIN were flashed if an unlocking service (like HP Tuners) would be able to flash my stock tune to the 2016/17 ecm.

My understanding is the limitation really comes from ECM type, in both cases it looks like they're both GPEC2A models, so I'm wondering if they could be "interchangeable" with the right tools.

Reached out to HP Tuners on this and they need the part # stickers on the back of both, so I'm waiting on the seller of the later year model to get back to me on it - so I figured I'd ask here for any input.

I put a 2015 ecm on a 2016. You are correct they need the information off your stock ecm. The one I purchased was clearly a Mopar unit but had no other indication of numbers on it other than Mopar. It was reprogrammed and worked 1st time.
