Any way to diagnose piston slap without tearing stuff apart?
For those who have had the same/similar experience - any concerns with reliability or do you guys think this thing will keep running fine as long as there's oil in it lol.
@Burla I tried lubeguard biotech with the Pennzoil platinum 5w20 + the Lucas Oil Stabilizer per our discussion earlier. No luck with the addition of the lubegaurd biotech at all. I was at the home depot and walked by the PYB 5w30 so I picked some up and had a royal purple oil filter so I did...
@Burla yea all manifold bolts to the block were pulled and replaced last month. That was the first thing I did. On both sides. Passenger side had a broken one. But again, yea all bolts were replaced and torqued to spec. The noise was the same before and after changing the manifold bolts.
I'm...
Just put PYB in and drove it a round for a bit then let it sit in park again. No noticeable changes unfortunately. But I would say that it actually seems like it does it more once it's warm than when it's cold. Here's another video after PYB 5w30.
*Updated video link
Hmm, so this doesn't really change in terms of sound or volume after it's warmed up. As soon as the idle drops down after startup (30 seconds or so after) it starts to make the noise. Not sure if that rules piston slap out entirely but it doesn't do it when it's above 8 or 900rpm. Only when the...
@ChevySlayer69 my only question to the piston slap diagnosis is that it is exactly the same noise no matter how hot the engine gets. Same after towing a heavy load as it is upon warm up at this point. Although I haven’t yet heard it during a cold night as it’s still in the 60s and 70s at night...
@ChevySlayer69 I saw your post in another 2012 piston slap thread about PYB. Seems like for some reason or another that does very well with this type of noise?
@Burla Here's a video from underneath my truck this morning after letting it run/drive for about 5 min. Sorry it's dark. The video starts a little in front of the oil pan on the driver side, moves behind the pan, then to the passenger side of the motor (where you see the light through the...
@ChevySlayer69 the only reason i'm questioning that it's piston slap is because it doesn't go away at all after it warms up like many of the threads I've read. That said I'm no mechanic so I don't know if the fact that it makes no difference to the noise necessarily when it's warmed up. It...
@Burla ok i'll run with the lucas additive until I reach 1k miles on it. I'm at about 600 miles on it so far and nothing yet.. I ordered the biotech so it should be here in the next few days and I'll try that once I get a few more miles on it.
My hope is that oil will be able to resolve it...
Thanks @Burla .
So knowing that I added the lucas oil thickener, do you think that it would somewhat mimic the viscosity increase that you're suggesting with the redline 5w30? Or do you still think it's worth giving redline 5w30 a try.
I'll switch my approach around and try the lubeguard first...
Thanks @Burla . I think i'm gonna give the Redline 5w-20 a go and test her out. Since I already added the lucas additive, figured it'd be better to start fresh with redline before stacking a second additive. Not sure how those play together.
If she still is making noise, i'll add the lubegaurd...
Thanks guys for the quick responses.
I've seen some folks have had good results with lucas. Are you suggesting it'll do more damage? I've put enough miles to tell whether it would have an impact or not and I would safely conclude that it has not had any impact to the noise.
Also, there are no...
Hey all. I just picked up a 2012 1500 with the 5.7 (this is now my third 4th gen truck lol). I will tell you that it is incredibly hard to find ANYTHING else other than the 'Hemi Tick' and the exhaust tick issue when searching through the forums and Google so sorry in advance for yet another...
Hey all. I actually wanted to revive this thread from a long time ago. I just picked up a 2012 1500 with the 5.7 (this is now my third 4th gen truck lol) and realized I posted something similar about this with another truck.
Two out of three 4th gen trucks that I have had now do this at idle -...
Hey guys so it ended up being the fobs themselves. They work on the truck to turn it on but didn't work for keyless entry. I actually picked up one of the dorman keys with the programmer at Oreilly's and used the keys I had to program it and the new key works.
Hye @NJMOPAR, radio works great. Antennae is connected. Both of my FOBs don't work no matter where you are or how close you are to the truck (or even in the truck in the passenger or driver side). Nothin..
Hey guys,
Just picked up a 2012 Ram 1500 ST quad cab but the keyless entry isn't working. I've found 1000 threads about this but none of them really addressed my issue (that I could find). If this IS a repeat thread feel free to point me in the right direction.
Anyhow, here's my problem. The...
Hey guys, just picked up a 2014 express and am looking to buy a 7" out of a 2013 slt. Has "black with black accent". Anyone know what this looks like? Also, any concerns putting a 2013 into a 2014 truck? I've read they are the same.
Maybe so, but oil weight and brand to me shouldn't have to be changed for a motor with 30k, especially when it's a pretty well-reputable synthetic.. Right? I've ran this oil for 20k miles so far
