Best Mods for under $100 (5th Gen Edition)

It's your truck...if you like it then go for it. There's everything from mild to wild and in-between so personalize it how you like it. Decal companies are not going out of business and there are OEM graphics options for a reason. Everyone has their own style. For me, I'm a minimalist and...

    Smog Issue

You apparently need a lot of driving to set all the monitors. Looks like there are two that are the longest to set. A Google search showed that some took 1000 miles before all the monitors were set. Many recommend getting a scan tool to monitor the flags. I have used drive cycle procedures...

    Security gateway bypass

The gen 4.5 HD trucks have the module behind the instrument cluster. Not sure about 4th gen trucks (LD or HD). I thought that it was somewhat inconvenient way up there under the dash until I learned about the HD truck module location. You have to leave the bypass in when doing changes. I always...

    Security gateway bypass

I used the Infotainment one: https://infotainment.com/shop/interior-accessories/obd-genie-programmers/c-modbyp/ Small, discreet, and I retained use of the OEM OBDII port.

    MPG effect of Leveling Kit

Driving like my wallet was empty only gained me a little under 1 mpg overall compared to driving like I wanted. Summer/winter blend swap was 1+ mpg.

    MPG effect of Leveling Kit

Good point. Even with the ORP, though, my front air dam barely cleared the sidewalk curb in parking lots.

Entry angle and ground clearance for off-roading.

    New grill 1 vs 2

Definitely the orange grill...I've always preferred the color-matched look. Have you thought about blacking out the mesh in the orange grill to match the lower valance and mirrors?

    New Truck Shopping Questions

If you want to look the cleanest between washes I recommend silver. It hides a lot of dust/dirt and looks cleaner than it really is. My last truck (2019 5th gen Ram 1500) was billet silver and always looked good to a point (a romp in the mud can't be masked by any color). I wouldn't realize how...

Driving habits reported to your insurance company?

Now that the companies are being forced to reveal some of their data-collecting efforts (and give CA people the theoretical option to opt-out) they are not as forgiving about circumventing their other "invisible" tactics to collect your data to sell. Plenty of sites either make it nearly...

    All going away..

My RAM burned very little between oil changes...maybe 1/2 quart or less at most. My VW doesn't burn much if any. My dipstick is pretty much on full when the oil change rolls around. Still doesn't change my routine of checking all of my vehicles each weekend "just in case". My diesel was a...

    suspension

My '19 Big Horn with ORP rode great. Firm but smooth and I could take road bumps/humps/dips in stride. As SwitcherLP said, it's hard to be down on how a truck rides like a truck. I'm probably a bit more complimentary than others as I came from an all-leaf spring suspension on my F-250 for...

Awful gas mileage: 2024 RAM Rebel GT

I think it's styling and option differences. I think the G/T gets a "performance look" with styling and an actual shifter handle but doesn't have any special tune. The only 5th gen 1500 with a special/performance tune (other than Tow/Haul) that I know of is the TRX.

    Keyfob replacement

My wife fell in love with that specific Santa Fe so the number of fobs became irrelevant until after the purchase.

    All going away..

You still add oil and change the oil. You just can't read the oil level from under the hood - you have to read it from the EVIC now.

    Keyfob replacement

Just got a second fob for a Hyundai my wife bought (vehicle only came with one). $350 for the fob, $80 for the key insert (laster-cut to VIN), then $130 to program it. Total out the door was $560...for just one complete fob. o_O My old 2003 Ford F-250 was $3 to get a key cut and $20 for a fob...

    All going away..

Lots of vehicles have already gone this route (my buddy's Alfa Stelvio - a Stellantis product - doesn't have an oil dipstick). The HEMI is an old block so has a dipstick. As new engine designs come out fewer and fewer DIY items are on it. Corporate will say that it prevents the owner from...

    Considering a new truck

That's just generic RAM corporate site photos they put there, not the actual truck...but those pictures will get people to the lot for that price. I had a diesel for over a decade and loved it, but it was pre-DEF. I would still have it today if it wasn't for a distracted Jeep driver. As much...

    Keyfob replacement

That is for the 5th gen trucks. The fobs are one-and-done. Once they are programmed they cannot be reprogrammed for any other vehicle.

Help! Can’t decide how to upgrade

No argument there. Diesel is a better puller/hauler period. And a HD (2500+) is a better tow rig no matter how you slice it. But...if I was towing 8200 lbs twice a year for 1.5 miles I don't think it's worth a diesel, especially if the OP is worried about run time for the engine. I'm in...

Help! Can’t decide how to upgrade

I don't have any experience with the 6.4L but you are adding upwards of a ton of weight (literally) that the engine has to move around...and that's empty. Some Google-ing shows about 13 mpg average fuel economy for the 6.4L and 20-ish for the Cummins.

    Engine hours/oil change interval

I know it takes engine runtime into consideration but I drive too much to test the calendar time. My wife had a 2020 Ford Ranger that she drove about 1200 miles a year. Her oil life went to 0% three times during the 4 years we had it so I know that the ford calculation used the calendar on hers.

Help! Can’t decide how to upgrade

I've had both. I loved my pre-DEF diesel and would still have it if it didn't get totaled. That being said I would not dive into another diesel unless I was using it for more than just gas mileage. When I was forced out of my F-250 (yes, a Ford) I had to re-evaluate what I was using my truck...

    Engine hours/oil change interval

The oil life meter should take everything into consideration when the truck is running so as long as you change it before it reaches 0% or the maximum time listed in the Owner's Manual then you should be good. Many change it earlier ("cheap insurance") but full synthetics (whether true full...
