I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab that will over heat when going slow in town OR going up a big long hill, but will drive all day long at 70mph on flat ground, and run perfect temp. But today it overheated going DOWN the mountain :(

any ideas whats wrong with it? this is the only problem i have with it everything else works perfect...

thanks

Welcome to the forum, hows your coolent level looking? Be careful driving that once it gets hot 4.7s can warp the heads just enough to cause a coolent issue.

coolant level is full, and under most circumstances it runs just a tad under 1/2 all the time,

thanks

Have you checked the rad itself? On your body style the rad and overflow tank should be seperate.

Maybe check any leaks around the water pump? Have any mods on it at all?

It understandable that the temp would be okay at highway speeds since there is plenty of air moving around. Its mostly go to go traffic and idle in which the fan will need to be used.

Great suggestions posted but also check to make sure there are no air pockets so maybe do the "burp method".

i'd make sure one of your coolant lines isn't plugged with crap.
Or the radiator for that matter.

If you don't see any leaks on the ground, I'd take a real good look to make sure you're not burning it.

very good possibility, a stat that doesn't open will make for an unhappy engine.
