I replaced my 05 5.7 engine with one out of a 08 Magnum. I used my original intake but it runs rough. Should I have taken the MDS solonoids out. I used the 08 block and heads. Do the solonoids slide out? Should I use the cam and lifters from the 05 engine? Thanks for any help

As long as you're using the stock cam, you can leave the solenoids in (default mode for MDS is off) and it'll run like normal. If you just take the solenoids out those four cylinders worth of lifters will collapse. Pulling the solenoids requires pulling the heads and replacing the MDS lifters. If you installed it then you already figured out the oil pan, front cover and valve covers (I hope lol); did you hook up the EGR? Did you put fresh o-rings where the manifold seals to the heads?

I bought the newer block and heads with no oil pan, front covers, valve covers or intake. I took that stuff off the 05 engine using the lifters in the 07 engine. When I started it, it would hardly idle and ran rough under 2,000 rpm. I changed plugs, no help. I now have the intake back off and the heads are oily around the ports. I wasn't sure if the solenoids were holding the intake up and causing a leak. I thought maybe I had one of the intake rings come out of place. The old engine has plugs where the solenoids go and I was thinking maybe I should change to the plugs. I am used to working with 440 engines and am learning about the 5.7. Appreciate your help.

I am intimately familiar with both (sigh, miss my old 440 Monaco, RIP)

OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Some ******* took the solenoids out. Ok, I want you to reread my previous post. Slowly. Then if you don't understand I'll explain further.

When you installed the 2008 short block did it still have the MDS solenoids installed?

Or did you remove the solenoids from the 2008 short block and install the MDS plugs from your original 2005 block?

If you left the solenoids in place in the 2008 short block the engine will run normally as MDS is normally off.

If you removed the solenoids and installed the plugs from the 2005 motor that would explain why it doesn't run right because the MDS lifters are still in the block.

I'm guessing this is what @HemiLonestar was getting at in his previous post.

I also didn't just flat out explain it again (as I had already mentioned it) because I wanted to see if he understood it himself first; people tend to understand things better if they figure it out themselves vs just having explained to them.

Yeah I know what you mean about the rash of these issues lately. I have read several post on other sites about it.

Sorry for jumping the gun and not letting the OP read it and try to figure it out.

I understand what you are saying. I left the lifters and solenoids in the 08 block but used the 05 intake and it ran real rough. I changed spark plugs and that didn't help. I have the intake back off and it was oily around the ports. It seems like the gaskets around the oil passages are bad. They didn't come in the intake set I got. I wondered if the solenoids were hitting the 05 intake and holding it slightly up. Trouble now is I took the solenoids out and have ordered the plugs to replace them as I can't get the old ones out of the 05 block. Guess now I will need to replace the lifters with the ones from the 05 block. All this just to make sure I have a good drive train to put in a older truck. Thanks for the info. At least I am learning how to replace the parts.
